I recommend following a PETAL structure:
Point - introduce your scene/chapter/event from the film/book
Explain - why is this chapter/scene important
Technique (for the film mainly) - how do techniques reinforce/show your point?
Analysis - explain how the techniques relate to your point ?
Link - link back clearly to the essay question

Hi,

I’d recommend approaching your essays similarly to how you would for GCSE English Literature—using a clear structure, detailed analysis, and sophisticated vocabulary. Erin has shared a great structure that you can follow, which should help.

Also, learning some go-to phrases can save time during the exam and help you express ideas clearly. For example, "this implies that" or "we can deduce that," plus some that show off complex grammar (like the subjunctive).

I hope this helps!

have you got some great essay phrases, are you using complex structures, do your points make sense and flow, using a PEEL (Point, Evidence, Evaluation and Link back to questions) structure?

Maybe have a look at some exemplar essays and compare yours to that, also speak to your teacher and ask them what you are doing wrong and how to improve. Good luck!

Totally get how frustrating that can be knowing the book or film so well but still getting low marks sucks. Sometimes it's not what you know, but how you structure it. Try checking out free essay examples https://eduhelper/essay-sampleshttps://eduhelper/essay-samples they really helped me figure out how to shape arguments and analyze better. There’s also a ton of help for students on different topics, so you can see how others break things down. You’ve got the knowledge just need to match it with the right format and flow. You’ve got this!
