D to a B in Physics - am I cooked?

Prospective Computer Science student wanting to get into Lancaster. Currently doing Maths, Physics, Computer Science, and predicted AAC. My Lancaster offer is ABB, and I've been getting D's in every mock and test ever. I don't think I've ever got above a C. My maths is fine according to my teachers, my "applied" questions are handled really well. Apparently I struggle with more wordy questions. Do we think I can change my grade around whilst also keeping up with my other two subjects in like 4 months??

I'm really scared I won't be able to do it and I've never been good at Physics at A-level so it's really demoralising... I don't have too much trouble with content I just really don't understand the questions, which obviously comes with exam practice. What do we think?

Hey, I totally think you can do it. I'm in Y12 and doing physics, and doing maths really helps with it. The content can be tough to get your head around, but with a bit of thought and help from PMT/Savemyexams, its certainly possible. I think work on your worded problem skills in maths. And if you really put in the effort now, like work like your life depends on it, you can get an A, but you have to work hard for it. Nothing comes without practice. I've got my mocks soon and I'm trying to get a B in physics, but for you, it's easier since you're doing maths. I think it's possible. You just got to have confidence in yourself and belief. Work hard at home and at school and go to your teachers for anything you don't understand. Also, I totally agree, it comes with exam practice, so as well, practice a lot of exam style questions. In all, I think it's totally possible for you to get a B in physics from a D, you've just got to, again, work really hard for it. It may seem boring, but its rewarding at the end. This is what I'm trying to do so i can get AAB offers in Bio, Psychology and Physics.

Hope this helps. and good luck to you. Don't be scared. As long as you work hard, you'll be able to achieve it. I hope it goes well for you

P.S. I won't be active a lot (like responding to messages/threads), but will check almost every day. So if you need anymore help, feel free to DM me on the Student Room

Hiya, I am in year 13 doing Maths, Physics and Spanish and I hearrrr you. I seem to understand the content okay but as soon as it gets to questions I just absolutely hit a brick wall and it's so frustrating, but don't give up hope already!! I went from a C at the start of the academic year to an A in my last mocks. Just make sure you're doing steady revision (as I am sure you are) and loadsss of exam questions. I 100% think that it is doable, but only if you believe that you can do it. I completely understand how demoralising it is trying so hard at something and not seeing results, but 4 months is a long time!

Hi Ashley, All the best with your revision. Practise really does make perfect, just break up the course. You could focus on Y12 topics first - mechanics if you're better at maths. Go to the pmt website and tackle the questions on Y12 Mechanics. From what you've written this topic will be the most accessible. Once you find all those suvat and projectiles questions easy, move onto the wordy ones. They always ask about Newton's 3rd and 2nd Laws. Once you've seen a few of these questions, they are really similar. Set aside time in your frees and evenings and you should gain confidence.

Yup, you're right. Think I need to focus on exam practice, starting with the easiest topics for me is probably the best. Thank you!

same boards my predicted ended up being ABC so i couldnt apply to the best unis so i applied leeds , Exeter , RHUL and surrey. I have offer from Exeter and RHUL looking to do a gap year tho idk . for physics Fields and Capacitors are my worst topic and Integration is killing me

My predicted were AAC but my head of sixth form lets you bump one grade so i ended up applying with AAB. Leeds and Exeter aren’t bad universities at all, you should be all good. I applied to Lancaster, Leicester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Sheffield and got 5/5 offers. How come u only applied to 4 unis, did u chose 2 courses for the same uni or didn’t choose all 5? I also hate fields and capacitors, I think Maths in general just comes with practice. Just do as many integration questions as possible and soon you’ll recognise what u should do when and just “rehearse” the answer

yeah i applied to two to the same uni ,but might take a gap year if i do significantly well im happy with Leeds , im just revising as much as i can to get it all , i tried to coheres an AAB but wasnt allowed they didnt even let ABB so yeah

which courses did u choose for ur double choice then and which uni? I’m also sweating out revision esp for physics lmaooo i wish u luck!! Leeds is a great uni but it’s pretty annoying that they wouldn’t let you change your predicteds 😏

Hi @ashleyyyy
Nice to hear your intrested in studying computer science at Lancaster. Throughout my A Levels, i also found understanding the questions hard and understanding what i was supposed to write about for each question. I found practicing with exam questions really useful, as i would do a few questions, then mark them using a mark scheme and see which points I had missed out. Then i would make notes on the points I'd missed out and what the question was about to see if there was any links and that would try to remember these in future exam questions in a similar style.
Also, making sure your answer has a good structure can really help you to meet each of the points in the mark scheme.
Physics and maths tutor was great for finding past exam questions that come with the mark schemes AQA Physics Revision - Physics & Maths Tutor.
Hope this helps!
