Have received an email from the college I applied to stating I have been identified for the August reconsideration pool. Does this mean I still place Cambridge as my firm as it only says I can apply on results day

afaik they havent given you an offer, so you would firm and insure other courses. then you contact cambridge in august. if you get in, you would reject your firm and go through a process that is very similar to clearing.

not 100% though, best to have someone else confirm (esp if they have first hand experience).

No, it means you carry on as if you haven't got an offer for Cambridge, but when your results are out, if you've made the standard grades for the College you applied to, you can ask to be reconsidered.

Basically, you missed by a very, very narrow margin, because of scores, however, something in your life journey has put you at a disadvantage. Right now, they have to make decisions on the evidence. However, in the summer, if you've got the grades, they will reconsider you ahead of the 'near miss' candidates who got offers, but missed their grades.

So you've got a ticket to ask to be reconsidered a) if you get the grades, but also b) if they get the gap-because offer holders miss their grades. You don't have to be reconsidered though, you can just ignore it when results come out and continue with whatever you had planned.
