uni 2025 student life?

What universities has everyone applied for this year??

I am passionate about fashion marketing and wanted placement year/study abroad which was hard to find good unis for the ones I have applied to are: Southampton, Portsmouth, Westminster DMU and ofcourse UAL!

I'd like to know from people who have gone to these unis what advice they'd give, what the student life is like and what they like and dislike about the area
NTU, Greenwich, Southampton and Manchester Metropolitan

Hello @r1y4,

Congratulations on your decision to apply to university!

I currently study psychology at Southampton university so I can give you a general feel of what it's like to study there:

Winchester campus is where fashion is based. It is such a pretty city with green spaces, lots of shops and a historic city centre.

Winchester campus has a dedicated students union social space with regular events, an art gallery, a library and creative and studio spaces.

We have over 200 societies which are definitely worth checking out using the link.

There are lots of opportunities for work experience and earning money, for example, the student ambassador scheme, the peer leader scheme, and UOS internships. If you'd like more info about these, let me know!

We have a strong sense of community and everyone here is so friendly, including the students and lecturers.

There are lots of other cities nearby to visit and the train to Southampton doesn't take much time at all if you felt like visiting.

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂

I’m starting Portsmouth in September but I live here and I can say despite the hate it gets it’s a really really nice place. If you live by the sea or want to then it’s defiantly the best area. There’s been a lot of development to the uni area recently and it’s very modern. Plus, there’s plenty of shops, outlets and places to hangout. If you like nightlife then there’s literally like 4 clubs outside the dorms lol

Hi @r1y4

I study fashion promotion and communication with a placement/study abroad year here at Kingston and really enjoy it! I will be going on my placement/study abroad year in September, so am currently in the process of applying for those.

I see you have already chosen 5 unis, but I can give you a little more information on the course here at Kingston in case it is useful, it may even give you ideas on things to research for other unis to help you make your decision.

In terms of the course content, in the first year I studied the following modules:
Fashion Context: This was all about PR and marketing, analysing brands and using marketing and business strategies, creating brand reports and new communication plans.
Professional Practice: A really creative module where we would have workshops in styling, photography, graphic design, image making etc. The project we worked on was creating a zine, so journalism was definitely something you could specialise in for this project.
CHS (Critical historical studies): In this module we learnt about the different histories and concepts in the fashion industry. Analysing images and text. The assignments for this are essays.
Fashion Promotion and Communication: This was really a mix of everything, putting all we had learnt into practice to work on projects that we could really be asked to do in industry. Such as proposing collaborations and creating campaigns, making sure we could back up our proposals with strong research.

Here are some previous posts I have done that may also be helpful and have more information:

I applied to Dmu, mmu, ntu, ual and uni of westminster but the fashion marketing course at dmu used to be fashion buying with marketing so i'm not sure if this is the first time they're doing the course so I think that one is too risky, my teacher refuses to let me go to ual as she went there and did her masters and she said it's not worth it

Thank you!! I actually got a offer from SOU recently.

Also thank you so much this is very insightful! Would you say that students from different subjects interact and mix easily? I want to make friends who have different ambitions! Also what would you say are some potential downfalls to SOU?

I see, what course are you taking?? I’ve heard good things about Portsmouth but I was conflicted because some people who have been there say the nightlife is dead lmao but some say it isn’t. I’m not from London so I orginally wanted to experience a more city lifestyle for University as I could try out many different food places and cafes and activities, that’s why I’m conflicted on what would be best.

I’m taking politics with international relations. But the nightlife is defiantly not dead there’s a load of clubs less than a minute walk from the dorms and if you walk about 15 mins there’s a great live music venue. Portsmouth unis reputation is mostly because it’s a good party uni lol. And it’s defiantly a big city without being silly to get around like London. But if it’s nightlife you’re concerned about then you defiantly don’t need to worry about that at Portsmouth 😃

I went to DMU and studied game art - the facilities for art students are great and the Vijay Patel building is stunning. Fashion students I knew always spoke really positively about the course.

Leicester has a big nightclub called Mosh where basically everyone went - it had three floors where they played different music. I never actually went (lol) but my friends all loved it. The SU does themed nights etc. too, and there's some other smaller clubs in town. I really loved that town was really great and you could always find everything you needed, lots of cool clothes shops and independent shops - my fav sushi place ever, Kuru Kuru - and lots of cheap places to do your shopping, including a fruit and veg market that was 6 days a week.

My main issue with Leicester, and why I struggle to recommend the place despite the fact there were lots of things i liked about studying at DMU, was that it was always really unsafe. I didn't know any women that walked around alone. And lots of my friends reported catcalling, harassment and spiking. In second year when i lived off-campus with friends we had police show up at our door to question us about a local car robbery 😅

Despite that I think it can be a really good fit for some people, I just think you have to really look out for yourself and your friends. I hope you have a great time at uni and your applications go well!
