Dropping out of Uni to pursue a different course - mech eng

I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am currently studying Architectural Technology (2nd Year) and I just don't believe this course is for me. I am now looking to pursue a Career in Mechnical Engineering and want to see if I am actually able to. I left College with a BTec in Art and Design as well as a Lvl 3 Foundation Year? (I did a 3rd Year in College) with the same qualification.

Would I be able to apply for a course with this Qualification? I was looking into a Foundation Year to get my Maths grade but I still not sure I understand the whole process so apologies if I sound like an amateur.

To study mechanical (or any type of) engineering at university you need a solid foundation in maths. I'm not sure what level of maths you'll have from Architectural Technology, but typical entry requirements for engineering are A-level or equivalent in maths. If you're not at that level then you'll need to either study a foundation year or take A-level maths.
Hey there ,I'm sorry to hear that things did not work out for you in your current course and I can only imagine how tough it was to make this decision but at least you made it now and not years into a career you don't like.
You're probably most likely to get into a foundation course considering your lack of physics and maths. I suggest you apply to some universities but for their foundation courses. Considering applications have closed on UCAS you may have to wait for early clearing to get considered. I didn't do the foundation year at my university but I have loved the three years of the main course .

I hope this helps .

yeh, I understand a Foundation Year is my way in but do you know what would happen to my Financing especially since I am dropping out in Second Year and midway through the second term?

Looking into the foundations for sure but do you know what will happen to my financing considering I dropped out 2nd Year, Mid 2nd Term?

No, sorry, I'm not up to speed with how student finance works.

You’re in a bit of tricky spot without A-level maths & physics, the maths is really important (and it’s in your interests to make sure you have an equivalent standard - without this a degree in mechanical would be a huge uphill battle, the maths skills are vital to both the degree as well as a career).

I personally don’t think you would be ready for an engineering degree yet which really leaves you with two options:

foundation year

Sitting an appropriate KS4 qualification

Another point is you have used two years student finance, my understanding is typically SFE will fund the length of your degree + 1 year, this means you will have to self-fund your first year of study of a new degree.

I would suggest:

you engage SFE to understand full financial implications to leaving and restarting a new program

You go discuss your existing qualifications and experiences with mech eng admissions departments and what else they would want to see before considering you fpr there course (2 years at university with a 2.1 certainly highlights your ability to manage work loads & responsibilities it’ll mostly be about getting the maths & physics to a place you are ready to go).

oh I thought I would have to self fund my final 2 years. I was planning on doing a foundation nonetheless as I DEFINITELY don't have the qualifications.

I believe you fund the first year then they would cover the rest, but you would have to check as my information may be outdated.
