Got a ticket due to lying about age

My daughter and her step sister travelled to Manchester with a Family and friends railcard. They got a ticket because my daughter is older than 15 and due to her anxiety she couldn’t tell the ticket officer her real age (16), eventually they got a ticket and their details but my step daughter said she would buy another ticket. However, the man didn’t care and still issued them a ticket.

Will they be getting a fined? If yes, how much? I’ve talked to them about it and told them that they shouldn’t have lied about the age in the first place. They usually travel with me but this time they wanted to travel alone but I didn’t know they used my card.

If they were travelling with tickets bought with a railcard that they're not entitled to use, then the tickets aren't valid. This means that they were committing a criminal offence, for which they could in theory be fined up to £1000.

You say that they were issued a ticket of some sort -- without knowing what this "ticket" was, it's not clear what exactly has happened.

I would suggest that you visit RailUKforums, specifically their Disputes & Prosecutions section. The folks there are very helpful, and will advise on what is likely to happen next. It's very likely that this can be resolved without a prosecution via an out-of-court settlement. And the risk of a prosecution is in any case going to be lower where a person under 18 is involved.

But whatever happens, make sure you don't put your head in the sand and hope this will go away. It won't.

so did the guard tell you you were being fined or anything? I have a colleague who travelled on a train with the wrong ticket, they were told there and then it wasn't okay and they got a fine. Not a pleasant outcome but they knew immediately what was happening

like others I don't know if you mean a 'ticket to travel' or a fine
