Can I still get 7s,8s and 9s

I just got my mock results back and all I have to say is I’m disappointed, if I got this as my actually GCSE’s I would cry.

Some context, during the last mocks I had terrible anxiety. I’m not sure if it was related to the exams but it was so bad I couldn’t sleep. The root of my anxiety was that I was scared of being alone. I always got so scared when it was the end of the school day to the point I started shaking and my heart started beating fast and it didn’t stop until I fell asleep. When I got home I was so scared of being by myself that I couldn’t revise properly.

English my writing has improved but I did so bad on timing.

In French they moved me to higher and I don’t really know what I’ve actually done wrong. There might’ve been a mistake because some people finished their french exam today but the results were available to parents 2 days ago. Also almost everyone I asked got a U.

In history I perform really well in lesson averaging a 14/15 out of 16 on my 12 markers, full marks on 8s, 12s and 4s.

RE I also perform well in lesson averaging on a grade 8 in lesson but I’m really struggling with timing.

Overall, I’m disappointed in my results and I know I can do better because I do in lesson but when it comes to exams I don’t understand.

Also if I’ve actually gotten a U in French then 7s,8s and 9s in all the other subjects because I’ll probably do foundation

Science CGP Book is the best place to start… know the book inside out!
With timing try timing yourself at home w past papers or questions and if you are a perfectionist(like me) just try suppress it- horrible advice the last thing anyone who is a perfectionist wants to hear but honestly I’ll give up my peace from being perfect for a better grade… Maths do Mathsgenie (all of the topics) or something similar for your exam board.
French past papers and for listening you could try like French podcasts (wouldn’t say Duolingo for such a short period of time) RE and Geo you seem to have a hold of but again Geo CGP book is your best friend. RE any textbooks. For RE my school said 7(3 for, 3 against, 1 conclusion) paragraphs. I’m currently at an 8/9 and in none of my assessments have written 7 paras for a 12 marker. 2 for, 2 against and 1 conclusion is your best shot especially if you are bad at timing (very relatable). It’s better to have half of an ans for each q than one perfect q…
Apart from that take care, prioritise your health and enjoy the year ahead- it is stressful but your last yr of high school you must remember to have fun!
Good luck!

Hey! I know people who have struggled with anxiety/timing as well. If you perform in lessons I'd say speak to your teachers and get their take, maybe apply for extra time and see someone about your anxiety and see if that puts you in a better place. After you've done all that you can worry about sorting your revision out. All the best! PS, just out of interest what grades are you aiming for?

UPDATE: I got my French writing mock back and I didn’t get a U but a 3 which is still bad but better than a U

Reply 8

Currently, in French, you may need to do foundation. Everything else, you are doing great, and you just need to keep doing what you are doing.

Reply 9

Yeah I'd agree about French. Rather try and guarantee that 5 than take higher and maybe get lucky and get a 6 or unlucky and get a u.

All 7-9s here. If I was you, I’d defo switch back to French foundation, or seriously think about dropping it. Better sort it sooner rather than later - it will free up time to revise other subjects! For sciences, English & geo (but especially the sciences), Physics and Maths Tutor (PMT website) is your go-to! And the CGP guides. Use past papers for all subjects. For geo, know your case studies well - try to summarise on one side of a4. English - reread the book, know your quotes & do character profiles for key characters/themes. Try making essay plans - after a bit of practice you’ll find yourself recycling the same stuff! Find some good YouTubers - I often find videos stick a lot more than a textbook. E.g. gcse freesciencelessons - his videos were actually amazing I miss watching them lol

Really hope this helps - best of luck !!

Also, I forgot to say, don’t be disheartened by your mocks. The fact you’re messaging on here shows you’re a great student who wants to do well! I’ve no doubt you’ll get the grades you want if you keep trying. Go to your teachers for help too on lunchtimes/after school, especially in the subjects you’re struggling in  ps maybe look into some anxiety medication for your actual exams?

Struggling with mental health and motivation right at the corner stone important exams is literally me rn because Im sitting my a levels this year. But, dont fear. Becuase RIGHT NOW february time is the absolute just in the nick of it time to start successfully revising. Putting it off any later than now will directly affect your actual gcses, so ingrain that in your brain. Right now is the last good chance I have to change things and get it all sorted, this is my last good straw because after march things will start getting tight. So 1 ingrain in your head that youre not too late and youre just in the nick of time for revising, itll make you feel like you can do this and its possible. 2 Realise how the fact that you are here asking for help and trying to get into the mindset is already the first step, meaning youve already started your acadmeic comeback journey you just need to keep moving forward. 3 Understand how you already have an advantage because most peopple dont start revising till like march april and they rush and end up failing or just barley passing (literally half of england), so you getting yourself together right now already puts you ahead of the game ie gives you confidence.
Those 3 things are some mindset advices which are super important bc without mindset and perseverance you wont be able to get anything done. Now. Real Deal. How do we improve your actual grades? Ill give you subject specific advice for science, maths and english lit lang. btw I got four 9s and four 8s at GCSE to give what im saying some consolidation.
Maths - GCSEmathstutor's gcse maths playlist, do every single vid. After each vid, find qs for that topic on mathsgenie and maths upgrade
n make flashcards for rules and qs that you found really hard and you might wana attempt again after some time. Maths is all about practise practise, once you see enough qs your good to go for the exam.
English - Lit and lang are two seperate things. If you get lang nailed, lit is 2/3 nailed too. So first focus on lang. Watch mr salles n mr everything english on their vids for p1 question by question and then p2 question by question. i don't recommend mr bruff as he teaches from a static grade 5/6 point while the other two mr s n mr e go in depth aimin for 9s. For sec b of p1 id recomened to memorise a base answer of a description of a place, and two people with dialogue between them. Make sure its already full marks ie improve it till its to that point. Now you could just write it in the exam just tweaking it to the prompt (If you go for this method youd obv never do the pic, go for the writing prompt underneath as that will give you more leeway).
Literature is the case of applying the skills from language into texts youve already studied instead of them being exclusively unseen like in lang.
Lit has 2 aspects, the books/plays and then poetry.
Books n plays = You DONT need to read the whole thing and annotate each line, all you need to do is gather main themes of the play/book and find key quotes that fit them and analyse those. Plenty of vids by mr salles and mr everythin e on those. Theres also a certain format that i found got me alwasy 27 - 30marks, if you want its here:
Answer should follow this format generally, for all play/book questions i.e Macbeth, Christmas Carol, Dr J n Mr H, Jane Eyre and Blood Brothers etc: (Steps after 1 and 2 could be in different order where appropriate, but including them all is necessary)
1. Point made with the keywords of the question in order to make sure your point is relevant to the question. Usually a couple lines long. (AO1)
2. This is where you further support your point made by stating a summarised proof/evidence for this point you made. NOT zooming into any quotes, but rather stating certain events of highlighting key phrases that support the point. KEY is to NOT zoom into language and effect too much here, simply build an argument to why you think the point in the beginning is true, throwing in some authorial intent even. Usually half a page long. (AO1)
3. zoom into quotes to support point + conclude with answering the q: Why would the author want this point to come across, a bril way to keep a consistent argument as it should match with the autorial intent mentioned in step 2 if you include it. Usually a page long. (AO2)
4. Make an argument why the point made in the beginning matters, why the author would want the point to be made in terms of context. Usually half a page long. (AO3)
5. More analysis with the effect on the reader addressed, what is the point teaching the reader? (usually here you would talk about the extract’s effect on the reader) + What is your point meant to make the reader think? Usually a page long. (AO2)
6. To wrap everything up, explain again why the point made is true by zooming and supporting with analysis and quotes, with a concluding paragraph at the end. Usually a page long. (AO1 + AO2)
(About 4 pages in exam)
OFC you could have a dif way and still get full marks but if you want somewhere to start the above would be good.
POETRY- ah poetry bro most schools push poetry on in year 11. You have two clusters that your school chooses to look at, power n conflict or love thru the ages. I did power n conflict but tbh the prinicple is the same, watch all the vids on them you can find by mr salles mr e or tbh any youtube vid theres so many = so many prespectives than the same dead ones in class.
THEN you have the last section which is unseen poetry, which is baisclaly where they give you poems that you havent studied, you look at them for the first time. You have to look at them thru the lens of structure n language, kinda like a lang p1 q2+q3 combo but you gotta add devices n techiniques that are specific to poetry, again watch mr e n salles vids on them. Unseen is somat you gotta practice kinda like lang p1, the last q in unseen is kinda like lang p2 q2 in terms of similarities/differences, so again once you get your lang nailed, lit is mostly paved aswell. Just finish up with watchin all mr e n salles vids that exist for the exams and youre good to go!
Science- Well this is different from english, english is developin skills mostly while combined science is heavily focused on understanding loads of concepts and how they connect. For science, you really need to double down on the spec, using it as a criteria and checklist of everythin you need to now and dont need to know. I have notes that take everything from vids like cognito, free science lessons n sites like pmt n seneca n seneca n the textbook and convert everything into condensed rigorous explanations, basically everything in one document if you want however its edexcel, you prolly might do aqa cus thats the most common so you gotta do that stuff yourself:
Get a topic up ie topic 1 from all science resources
> Seneca
> Save my exams
> Pmt
> Cognito
> Free science lessons
Now go through each resources and write down how it addresses the first spec point in the topic. Miss out info that does not relate to the spec because you dont need to know it then cus alot of these sites sometimes hit or miss the spec.
Do that for every single spec point youll be done in about 200 days if you did 4 specs a day but depends what year you are in n urgency.
All thats left is to make flashcards of all that specification specific info, n voila done. Do those flashcards AND do past qs per topic by Physcs n maths tutor (pmt) and youll be good to go. Its really important to ask your teacher on anything you dont understand as many concepts in science require foundation concepts to be nailed in the first place in order to advance. This method is really for any content based subject like geography and re really, just glean information from all resources you can find and just make sure you follow the specification, and memorise and do qs.
I have my own notes that I made for science using this method, however they were combined and for edexcel, lmk if you need the link for them.
(I also have geography aqa paper 1 notes using the rigourous process of gleaning information from the aqa textbook and online resources like cool geography and youtube videos and seneca and save my exams etc, so let me know if you need the link to that too.)
more detailed eng lang advice > no.1 way to maximise marks here is by memorising a pre-made full mark answer for paper 1 sec b n writin it in the exam savin you time for other qs + get those 40 marks nailed. First off you needa make the pre-made answer in the first place, its gotta include a description of a place + description of two people + dialogue between them. Make sure it includes as many lang + struc devices cus thats literally what the markin boils down to. Get it marked by a teacher, get their feedback and basically improve until your scorin full marks. If you need an example base ans i got one if you want. In the exam then you’d basically rewrite it all from memory but tweaking it to the written prompt (you wouldnt do the pic for the base ans method cus pic descriptions dont allow stories/descriptions outside the pic) I have an example ans if you want it its here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cwcRG0g7YnnrUACur4h4tvskwP1k-5ecytzBt7u6-gk/edit
> All of lang p1 and alot of lang p2 is based on being able to recognise structure/language techniques and then bein able to talk ab their effects. To get confident in this you wana search ‘lang devices’ and ‘structure devices’ and watch every single vid you can get your hands on, noting down everything new you learn. There'll be so many dif views on effects in all the vids which is exactly what you want, you wanna have exposure to as many variations of effects the same type of devices can have so you can use them in your writin later.
> Watch mr everything english n mr salles on their breakdown vids of each q from each paper theyre super helpful, and in general any vid you can come across> Answer qs from past papers, take em to your teacher, take their feedback and always aim to make the next piece of work better than the last.
Since ur exam is this week literally just hyperfocus on lang and good luck!
> Make a word chart n bluetack it above where you work with way better synonyms of normal words used in most people work like good/bad/powerful/weak/beautiful, adding more synonyms to it as you progress n actively use them more and more in every next piece of work.AND Neva eva use ‘show’ or ‘highlight’ use other words/phrases like ‘elucidate’ ‘delineate’ ‘puts forth’ ‘characterises’ ‘causes the course of thought to align with’ ygm just anything but show.
IN CONCLUSION, ITS TOTALLY POSSIBLE, I GOT ALL 8S AND 9S AND I WAS AT 5S AND 6S ASWELL IN THE BEGINNING OF YEAR 11.

more detailed eng lang advice > no.1 way to maximise marks here is by memorising a pre-made full mark answer for paper 1 sec b n writin it in the exam savin you time for other qs + get those 40 marks nailed.
