disheartening

Hi everyone,

I’m feeling really disheartened and could use some advice. I recently applied to a uni for their children’s nursing undergrad , but I was told I don’t have enough UCAS points. This has really upset me because I already have an undergraduate degree in Childhood and Youth Studies and practical experience working with children.

I genuinely believe I have the skills and passion needed for this program, and I’m struggling to understand why my qualifications and experience aren’t enough. I know nursing programs are competitive, but I thought my degree and experience would help me meet the entry requirements.

I’ve reached out to the university to see if there’s any flexibility, but in the meantime, I’m wondering:
Has anyone been in a similar situation and found a way forward?
Do you know if other universities might be more flexible with their entry requirements?
Are there alternative pathways I could explore (like postgraduate courses or apprenticeships)?

I’m really determined to start this year and would appreciate any advice, tips, or stories from people who’ve been in a similar position.

Thank you so much in advance!

Unis usually want to see recent study - within the last 3-5 years. When did you complete your first degree?

Hi,
Please don't be too disheartened the childrens section is meant to be very competitive.
First off 100% email the university to see exactly where the issue is. You could complete and access to nursing course at a college. You will likely have to pay for this without a loan as your above 18 so could explore the idea of doing it part time. You would need to research what is available in your area.

I am not sure which uni or how many unis you applied for but you may just need to apply to a uni with lower entry requirements. Every uni will have the entry requirements on their website so check you reach them before you apply. You can apply for up to 5 in one application so take advantage of this. From just a quick Google the University of Surrey has lower entry requirements. It would also be worth considering if you would do a foundation year. This means the course would take 4 years but your more likely to get on
There are lots of postgraduate 2 year courses for becoming a nurse IF you have a relevant undergraduate degree. I am not the best to advise you with this but once again check the entry requirements on a unis website for more details.
Make sure the other areas of your application are as strong as possible eg. Your personal statement and references. Often if you email your old college or sixth form and ask them to read a personal statement you can get advice which may be beneficial.

Please please check as well if your eligible for a loan for these degrees as typically you cannot get funding for a 2nd degree. I do not know your situation but make sure you google and do your research as you may need to consider doing the degree part time so you could work and fund it.

The other route could be the nursing associate route. If you get a job as a nursing associate you may then be eligible to apply through your hospital for a nursing degree. This can typically be shortned to a 2 year course due to the skills gained in being an associate. You would be paid along side this for the work as well so could be much more practical. This is not the traditional route into nursing so I would 100% recommend emailing your local hospitals and doing your research into it but it is an option.

Overall please don't be too disheartened you have plenty of time to find a different route or a course that works for you. I hope this somewhat helped and best of luck. If you have the passion for it you will get it I have no doubts.
