GCSE options business, citizenship or art

Hi Im I’m year 9 currently and I’m picking my GCSEs in two weeks. So far I have picked English lit, English lang, maths, bio, chemistry, physics, geography and french +rs outside of school so taking exam next year). I am really unsre on what I should pick for my last subject and I have shortlisted 3 that interest me. My 3 shortlisted are business, citizenship and art. Can anyone who currently takes any of these give me a n honest opinion if I should do it or not? Thanks sm

Hiya, I can't vouch for business or citizenship as I didn't do either but I did do AQA GCSE art and absolutely loved it. I think that it was so lovely having a lesson to go to where I could just draw in the midst of the stress of exams, especially if you have friends in that class too. It was such a good outlet for me, however it does take a LOT of time out of your day with so much coursework, so I would only pick it if you really really do love art as you will be spending a lot of time on it. Another benefit is that quite often Art exams are before the rest of them. For example I had finished my art GCSE by the end of April so I had those lessons to revise for other subjects (although I would check with your school first to see if that would be the same for you)

thanks for your advice! I do want to do it but I also want to focus on my main subjects to make sure I don’t fall behind. I have also heard that it takes a LOT of time and that’s the only thing thats really stopping me

I didn't pick art but I have friends that did. They spend a lot (and I mean A LOT) of their free time drawing / doing whatever for the art GCSE so it is a pain. They're also catching up after school!

(2) My biggest advice is picking subjects with next to no coursework. Missing just one lesson of coursework equates to a few lunchtimes of catching up (ask me about it...)

Hi there!

I did AQA Art for GCSE and like others say its a lot of work but its more like there's no right answers and you basically get to work however you like and pursue any idea you like, its very refreshing from the strict right//wrong attitude of other subjects, and I always used my art work to procrastinate other subjects. I'd choose to do my Art work for fun, that's why you see Art students working so much, its super fun! If you have a real interest and love for art, I think you'll not only really enjoy it but do very well. I'm biased because I hated the sound of business and I've never heard of a citizenship GCSE before, and I adored Art GCSE, but it was really good!! Realistically, if you're working hard in your lessons, doing a bit of homework and keeping yourself caught up and on track, Art will be just fine--don't let 'lots of work' hold you back, life always has a lot of work and GCSEs will never be easy, so just make sure you're doing something you enjoy and you'll maximise your chances!!
