What is it like at University of Birmingham

Iā€™ve received an offer to study physics with particle physics and cosmology at University of Birmingham. Iā€™m super into physics, but have also had offers from other uniā€™s. At the moment, Birmingham is my front runner, but Iā€™m a little unsure about the experience and how well I would fit in.

Iā€™m a bisexual guy, who is into typical nerd stuff (marvel, dc, Star Wars, dr who, lotr etc.) but also love Disney, and most musicals. How well would I fit in at Birmingham? Iā€™d love to hear some of your opinions and experiences at Birmingham, good or bad, as Iā€™m a little anxious about the future. I didnā€™t have many friends at high school and donā€™t want to be alienated for another 4 years.

Thanks in advance for the help

Hey! I'm currently studying at UoB, and am absolutely loving it! I am definitely into some 'nerdier' things as well (LOVE a good Marvel movie), and there are so many clubs and societies on campus, that I guarantee you'll be able to find some where you can meet like minded people! I know for a fact that we have a Doctor Who Association ā—”Ģˆ. I also find that university is much easier than high school to make friends, because you're able to meet so many different people who have similar interests to yourself, both academically, and outside of academics! I hope this helps... let me know if you have any other questions ā—”Ģˆ.

Hey! I am current student at UOB and I totally get feeling anxious about fitting inā€”moving to uni is a huge step, and finding "your people" can feel daunting. But from my experience at Birmingham, especially at UOB youā€™d definitely find your crowd here. šŸ™‚
And with your Interests, youā€™ll definitely find people who are just as passionate. Thereā€™s a Sci-Fi & Fantasy Society that hosts movie nights, discussions, and events, which I am sure you will enjoy.
Trust me when I say this, everyone is in the same boat at the start, so even if socializing isnā€™t your strong suit, there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with people naturally. šŸ™‚
You will be great! Good luck and see you at UOB! šŸ™‚

Congratulations on your offer to study physics at the University of Birmingham! I am currently studying for my master's degree at the university and I have had a great experience so far. The university has many clubs and societies related to your hobbies, which can be great for making friends. I am in the panto society and book society and I have met such amazing people!

Hiya, I'm a postgraduate ambassador for the university, and think through your course and societies you shall certainly find your people! I'm also a bi guy and majority of people on my course are also queer with a big love of sci-fi and fantasy so shouldn't have to look too far to find community! If you love musicals, you are also only a two hour train journey away from the West End in London in Birmingham, which gives you the benefit of being able to see shows frequently without having to live somewhere as expensive/hectic as London!

Hi dear, I am currently a student at the university of Birmingham and I can tell you this university is one of the best options for you. Specially for the fact that you mentioned diversity and inclusivity factors. The university is very inclusive and safe for the LGBTQ community. They have clubs, events, and other stuff that support this community. many students and staff members are part of the pride community. Personally, I have attended events as such. There is also a tea party that takes place in the Guild of Student every Friday, it is run by friends from LGBTQ background and a great place for making friends and feeling comfortable.
My daughter was a physics with particle and cosmology at Lancaster and is bisexual (shes at manchester/spain phd now). Lancaster is a smaller city but she fitted right in, so I think you will have no problem at all in a bigger city such as Birmingham. Universities are very big on inclusion and have wonderful LGBTQIA+ groups. But also definitely have your hobby groups as well. Daughter was big into Disney and pub quizzing and badminton. Birmingham is a lovely city having visited there myself. Its the hub of lots of train routes to lots of locations, and music venues. Congratulation on your offer, particle physics is such a good degree to have. Its very niche as theres not many that do it, but if you are to apply for a phd in particle physics, its less competative than some other physics topics.
