A levels option help- Spanish or Further Maths?

So I was fairly set for quite a while on taking physics, chemistry, maths and further maths for A levels. I'm on track for hopefully getting 9s in all of these subjects, so the difficulty isn't much of an issue, and also I enjoy them all (apart from chemistry sometimes, although that is mainly due to my teacher, I find the subject pretty fun though).

I'm currently looking to do a STEM based career, probably in some form of engineering, and looking at places such as Oxbridge but also down the degree apprenticeship route. So I took these subjects because they cover a wide range of science-based careers that I could follow, as I'm not particularly set on anything (but as I said, currently looking into engineering quite a bit).

Over the past few days however I've been talking to my Spanish teacher and having second thoughts on whether I should take that. Again, I'm on track to hopefully get a 9 on it, I really enjoy it and find it fairly easy, and am very interested in developing my language skills further. My teacher (and another teacher who helps with careers) said it's a good subject that shows unis a different skill set and is something that Oxbridge looks on fairly fondly.

So basically I'm just here to ask, how true is this? I'm not that concerned about the difficulty, mainly on how useful the subject would be to get me into a top level university, as I have seen some Cambridge engineering courses say that further maths is highly recommended (and sometimes required), but I also think that Spanish may make me stand out with a different skill set. Spanish would also be a nice break from the other subjects sometimes, and will help me learn more of the language, but I really don't want to miss out on a top level university just because I'm not taking further maths.

Thanks in advance, any advice is greatly appreciated.

as long as you dont give yourself too much work and can actually deal with that then i would suggest not t do spanish anyway because its as long as you can prove to oxbridge unis that you have a true undeniable passion for the subjects or courses that you are taking

I think that Further Maths will show the Uni's much more clearly that you're passionate about the subject, but at the same time doing Spanish also would show that you have a wide variety of skills.

Could you not take a spansh course on the side or something (e.g. an online course or something).
That way you get to do the a-level subjects you were originally gonna do, but still get to do a spanish course. And it will also show outside curricular stuff/outside interests etc.

that's what I've been told by quite a lot of people when I ask about either subject, so yeah it's getting quite hard to choose

oh thanks yeah! I hadn't thought of that before but will definitely consider it, do you know of any good courses online that I could have a look at?

universities tend to only look at your top 3 alevel results and don't really take your lowest into much consideration. if taking spanish would make you happier then i'd go for it! yes taking further may appear better and give you an extra edge, but don't let that what i'd be at the detriment of your mental health. i know someone who got an offer from cambridge for maths when he was doing comp sci, maths, further maths, and drama. the reason he lost it was bc of the cambridge maths test (which is really hard!!)

I don't know of any myself, but then again I've never looked into it.

oh okay thanks, that's really helpful! I've been to a sixth form open morning today and also heard a bit about potentially taking AS Spanish, so I might have a look into that as well

If FMaths is required you need to take it.

Btw, Engineering is often better studied at a non-RG uni as you get an industry focused approach. A year in industry is also helpful. Many of my top stdents aren't going to Oxbridge now for Engineering.

yeah that's not a bad idea!

i've looked into it and taking further would help you for oxbridge, but like what muttley79 said make sure that oxbridge is actually what's best for you and that it's definitely the course you'd enjoy the best and get you where you need to go! don't just think there because of the name 🩷

oh thanks! yeah I was mainly thinking of Oxbridge because one of my teachers recommended looking at RG unis bc I'm pretty studious and get pretty good grades and stuff, but thanks that's really helpful.
I'm not fixed on the idea of engineering, just something I'm looking into now because it seems really interesting and science-based (and I really don't wanna do medicine lol).
I'm also thinking about degree apprenticeships because they seem like a really great opportunity to get loads of work experience in.

thanks for looking into it! yeah I think at this point it would probably be wiser for me to stick with fm (especially for applying to sixth forms and stuff), and just get more research in as to whether I can do spanish AS additionally/ do another Spanish course, because the colleges I'm applying to have said I can change my options pretty late on if I change my mind which is good.
thank you though yeah, I think I should do more research into generally what courses I think are best and then look for what unis offer the best ones, instead of the other way round lol
