Rejecting Cambridge- help???

I’m very grateful to say I’ve managed to get an offer for BA Geography from Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. HOWEVER, I’m not sure if Cambridge is 100% the right place for me- I’ve commuted to the city every day for nearly 2 years and I’m kinda bored of it now, I’m weird about food so catered accommodation isn’t my idea of a good time, and I’m not super amazing at handling stress (rejected super competitive sixth form due to this). That said, I know Cambridge is an insane opportunity and I’m still super excited about being offered, being around academics of that level is super inspiring and I love the college I got into (thankfully first time, I think being pooled would have affected this decision further). I have offers from Manchester, Bristol, UCL and Edinburgh for either Geog/Earth Sci and I’m predicted 3A* in biochemgeo. In the future I want to do research but also maybe work in seismology/hazards/meteorology etc- don’t want to make too set decisions as of now as I know I’ll probably change my mind lol. I’m probably gonna reject Edinburgh due to being a 4yr degree and UCL for financial reasons even tho I loved the uni. May reject Bristol as I’m leaning towards Earth sci but Bristol is my lowest offer at BBB. Manchester was my fave city I visited and I loved the uni but heard the accom isn’t great and it’s very party dependent (hard to say now if that’s my vibe or not). Either way I’ll probably want to do postgrad. I don’t wanna make a decision I’d regret, do I firm Cambridge or not??? Please be honest, everyone I’ve asked has told me to do what I think is best but I need honest feedback 🙌

Mate, you CANT NOT accept an offer from Cambridge. You are really blessed and fortunate to have yourself an offer. You’ve gone through the stress of entrance exams and interviews. You have to take the opportunity. A lot of students would murder to be in your position 😭. Since you’ve interacted tr d with the city quite a bit, I say you should focus more on the uni aspect. Maybe that may enthuse you more.

On a real though, I think you should rethink Manchester. You loved the city. As much as Accommodation isn’t great I think the fact you applied to the Uni and liked the city, those are big factors for you going. Partying is NOT an issue. If you’re focused on what you want to do, you won’t be swayed.

But really give Cambridge the consideration it deserves. Pressure and stress comes with EVERY Uni (obviously a bit more for Cambridge) but judging by your grades and your offers, you’ll be fine.

Good luck
For what it's worth, you can do second year entry for Scottish MAs, turning them into 3 year degrees
Just remember you have until May to decide what you will firm.

I'd spend time looking at the course details in particular, as this will be different at both as to what you can do through the duration of the course. You also need to think about whether supervision style teaching is for you or not, as that's a huge educational difference.

I'd say the first paragraph of this is poor advice. You certainly can choose not to go to Cambridge and how much other students would want to be in your position makes very little difference to whether or not OP should. Going to Cambridge entails another 3+ years of intensive study, it's not like getting in is the hard part and the rest is easy.

To give you some clarity on some of your points:

1) "I’ve commuted to the city every day for nearly 2 years and I’m kinda bored of it now" - That's fair. It is a fairly small city but the vibe as a student is very different to as a non-student. Obviously the degrees include a lot of work but there is also a lot of things to do outside including societies, clubs, college bars, sports, etc. I've lived here 3+ years now and I'm still finding new things. It's a fair consideration but there is a lot to do, especially in term time.

2) "I’m weird about food so catered accommodation isn’t my idea of a good time" - Some colleges do have kitchens. I'm not sure about Emma but they may have smaller kitchenettes with the possibility of kitchens in other years. If it's medical, including allergies or sensory issues with foods (e.g. relating to Autism), then colleges are usually very willing to accommodate your needs. I don't know enough about the situation with Emma but if you email the college, they'd very likely provide more clarity than I can. Also, there are usually multiple food options available at hall and you can specify further dietary requirements if necessary. In my college, if you have a dietary requirement that isn't catered for, they are happy to cook you a specific meal. Perhaps Emma is the same, I'm not sure but it is worth considering and asking about.

3) "I’m not super amazing at handling stress (rejected super competitive sixth form due to this)". It is quite a stressful place and the environment doesn't always help with this. There is a lot of support available from tutors to other pastoral staff but exams can be stressful and the workload is high during term. We do have long holidays and a really good support department but this is something to consider.

4) "In the future I want to do research". Cambridge is very good for research generally. I can't advise further about Geography as I don't study it.

5) "I’m probably gonna reject Edinburgh due to being a 4yr degree". This isn't Cambridge-related but I should mention that for some STEM subjects, direct entry to second year is offered for some courses. I think this includes some Earth Sciences courses but you'd have to check your course directly online.

6) "I’m probably gonna reject [...] UCL for financial reasons". Again, not Cambridge-related but it's worth looking at the bursaries offered. I don't go so I can't be sure but UCL offers generous financial support to many students who may struggle with the cost of living in London.

I hope some of this is useful. If you have any further questions, I'm happy to try my best to answer them.

Yeah this is a little what I’m worried about lol, I’m finding it hard to balance what I want with the general expectation of what I should do hahah, I know I’m very lucky to get as far as I have but I don’t wanna decide something as important as this based off other people alone

That’s a very good point about uni activities, as a sixth former a lot of the city can feel very closed off if you’re not affiliated with the uni so I’m glad to hear things open up a bit once you’re there. As for the kitchen thing you’ve hit the nail right on the head there as I’m autistic with sensory issues who couldn’t even handle the meal on interview day lmao but glad to hear there is alternatives. I’m not completely vulnerable to stress but mental health is something I’ve struggled with in the past linking to stress (super bad at GCSEs but ok now at Alevel) but good to hear there’s support available. As for Edinburgh, there’s a few other unstated reasons for rejection as I mostly applied to have a 5th option as I have family there, and for UCL I’d prefer bursary options to go to students who truly need it honestly. Thank you so much for your responses!

This probably isn't much help but I've got a similar situation (with MML at Clare) and I'm just going to give it a go. I guess if you really hate it you can probably leave and reapply to other unis the following year but idk. My personal reasoning was that at Cambridge everyone is in the same boat and I'd be around like-minded people. Also, there's a slight chance I could regret Cambridge once I'm there due to the workload but I know for a fact that I would always feel a bit of regret if I rejected Cambridge and went to my second choice (Durham). Finally, I feel like both of our courses, although undoubtedly very intense, might be slightly less so than something like law, engineering or medicine.

P.S. I feel like being in a central college (as both of ours are) for the entire 3 years without worrying about flats and not having to cook could save us time that we would otherwise waste at other unis

I would definitely email Emma and ask them about their cooking facilities and whether there is access to kitchens for medical reasons. I think there is some more modern accommodation at Emma which may(?) include cooking facilities but I'm not sure how that is distributed.

I don’t want to come across negatively but there’s so many people dying for that space at Cambridge so if you’re not 100% in for it and wanting this I think it’s best to do what is best for you and move on from them as like others have said you can always go back there for a masters or phd! Good luck with whatever you do

You don't have to decide now.

I rejected an Oxford offer some years ago and it has not affected me at all.

Compare the courses and check on meal options and accommodation option elsewhere.

To OP, it doesn't matter if anyone is "dying for that space", the decision should be solely yours. Applicants choose not accept their Cambridge offers every year and are equally happy with their decision as those who choose to accept it. At the end of the day, it is just another university.

That sounds like a sensible way forward. Focussing on the course options and the wider view of everything the university offers may well change your current perspective on the city. I’d also say that the nature of teaching and the collegiate structure at Cambridge is likely to mean that you are supported far more closely, from an academic and a pastoral perspective, than other RG universities. Particularly so if you advise them of your personal circumstances and requirements. Best of luck and I hope everything works out well for you.

Hi! I feel like I’m in such a similar situation lol. I have an offer for BA Geography from Pembroke College with very similar interests. All the other courses I applied to are BSc Geology and I have offers from Imperial, Durham, UCL and Bristol and I can’t stop thinking if I would rather go for a geology course as I much prefer physical geog but didn’t have maths to apply to Cambridge’s natsci course in Earth Science. I really loved Imperial but my parents don’t want me to firm it instead of Cambridge as London as a student will be expensive, involve long commutes and could be a bit isolating? Saying this, I think I will firm Cambridge because it’s such an amazing academic opportunity and the physical geography modules do seem really interesting. Plus there’s always the possibility to specialise in an Earth Science field postgraduate and a Cambridge degree would be very applicable. I know it’s such a privileged decision to be making but want to make sure I end up in the right place for me. Catered food and feeling like I wouldn’t belong at Cambridge is also making me stress. I know this probably doesn’t help but just wanted to share because our situation is too similar lol.

That’s so incredibly similar to me, I’m also hoping I can specialise post grad as I also didn’t have maths!! I think a Cambridge degree will hopefully be facilitating enough even without being specifically earth science, I’m definitely going to choose mainly physical geog modules to be able to specialise later on. I also loved London but had to go against it for financial regions, so you’re not alone in that part! Glad to hear I’m not the only one feeling weird about catered food, everyone else I’ve seen seems to be so okay with it even though Cambridge has high levels of neurodiversity, makes me feel like I’m the weird one LMAO. I’m not sure if I can plug my social medias here but my tiktok is @e1bhlin if you wanna talk more!!
I'm sorry about that but I wanted to ask if the program you were rejected from was this one?

Cambridge has an earthquake platform that simulates whatever sort of quake you want! That's got to be a winner! OK, it's in a basement in Engineering, but I bet the Geographers have found it!

help it’s good to hear we aren’t alone!!! I’ll definitely choose mostly physical modules too but I’m glad the human ones sound interesting too. I’m just praying the catering will be flexible. When had I lunch during my interview it was actually really nice?? There was lots of choice but I’m just the kind of person that prefers not to eat at a huge table in front of loads of people lol. I’ll follow your tiktok mine is @izzizik (I think I have already seen one of your videos when I was searching about other geography offer holders lmao)
