Help on uni decisions

Hi, I currently have offers for cs at uni of notts, sheffield and leicester, comp systems engineering at sheffield and electronics and comp eng at newcastle with predicted A*A*A in maths, electronics and cs. Im struggling to decide which I should put as my firm choice as I enjoy the theoretical side of cs but want to be able to learn more low level programming (specfically C/C++). I also like sheffield more than notts after going to open days. The main issue i have is that sheffield cs doesnt say anywhere that the cs course offers any modules relating to low level programming. However comp systems engineering doesnt have much of the theory. I plan on putting leicester as my insurance choice. Please give advice thanks!
You will probably get invited to Offer Holder days - these are a great opportunity to look around on an ordinary day without all the bells and whistles of an Open Day, to ask questions, to listen to a more focussed subject presentation and to think about the reality of being at that Uni and living in that place.

Do any of these courses have any sort of work-experience or placement - this adds heaps to your graduate CV.

Just remember that you can't make a decision until you have all of your replies, and you have until *June* to enter your decision.

Thanks for the advice, I will probs go to the offer holder days to try and get more info.
Fortunately all the courses I applied for have years in industry and I got offers for all of them so good issues to have

Hey @Deathrise ,

I see you have already looked into the modules offered at each university which is a great first step in making your decision! I definitely agree with the reply stating you should attend offer holder days, this way you can ask all your burning questions and possibly do a taster session.

Here are some more factors that may help you with your decision:
Distance - Would you prefer to commute or stay on campus. If you decide to stay on campus, would you prefer to be closer to home or further?
Cost - Look into the cost of living in the area, especially if your planning to live on campus. I recommend checking out the average cost of the type of accommodation you want e.g the cost of having an en-suite vs a shared bathroom.
Size - Would you prefer a larger campus with a large student population? Or would you prefer a smaller campus with a smaller volume of students?
City vs campus - Some people prefer to live where a university somewhat spread across the local city, these areas often offer a wider variety of activities and exploration! However campus university are often much easier to traverse as everything is closer together and there may be a tighter-nit community.
Opportunities - Check out the opportunities each course provides you, there may be some factors that will seem more appealing, such as work experience opportunities.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

Hi thanks for that! I had completely forgot to consider those factors so thanks 😅

Hiya,

I am currently a 3rd year CS and AI student at the University of Sheffield and I can say that there is a heavy focus on theory in the degree. There are several modules that focus on algorithms runtime and the predicate logic behind proofs. In terms of low level programming, we learn Haskell in our 2nd year and I had an AI module in my second year where I had to use C#. In our first year, we also have a module that teaches a little bit of assembly but this is a small exposure to the language.

Uni of Sheffield will have offer holder days later on this year so when you attend the University, you can speak to professors and lecturers about any opportunities they have if you want to learn low level programming on the side of your degree.

Hope that helps and if you have any other questions about the degree or Sheffield in general, just let me know!

Yours Sincerely,
Jivanthika

It's alright. The attraction of the University of Leicester isn't the city centre, it's the university campus, the union, the green areas, and the halls of residence (they're mostly old and quaint, unlike some monstrosities elsewhere) in Oadby.

I daresay Leicester has some of the best halls of residences, with a genuinely great spirit, in the UK.
