Hello, I am currently in year 12 and looking to study Politics and International Relations or International Law at University of Manchester. I want become a diplomat ambassador for the UN and I have been doing my research on how to but it is very confusing so can anyone help me explain?

Thank you.
Hey! I am currently applying to study Politics and International Relations this year at university, i have a rough idea on the process from my own research. Assuming you want to work in the UN on behalf of the UK, you will need to apply via the FCDO. As i would imagine they post job alerts for positions for the UK’s office in the UN in either Geneva or New York.

I would say the best way to find out is by contacting the FCDO themselves, they are a friendly bunch as i had to email them before for research. They would be happy to help, i would stress that working for the UK in UN is a dream job etc.

If its working for the UN themselves, im pretty sure the UN has a careers page. Again, e-mailing is a very handy way of getting valuable help!

Good luck in your application next year! 🙂

The UN itself does not have 'ambassadors' in the diplomatic sense of the term. Now, ambassadors do work at the UN, but not for the UN ; they are the ambassadors of UN member states who represent their country at the UN. For example, the UK has its own Ambassador to the UN, so does France, etc.

If you want to represent the UN itself, however, you'd have to apply to work for the UN directly. But you wouldn't be a 'UN Ambassador', you'd likely have a title like 'UN special envoy' or 'political affairs officer' etc.
