Exeter or Sheffield for Economics and Politics?

I am an International student and I got offers from Uni of Exeter, Uni of Sheffield and Newcastle uni for Economics and Politics. I saw on some league tables that Sheffield ranked the highest overall but it's not really famous for economics. Moreover, Exeter's entry requirements are much higher and the course is harder to get into as far as I know. But I am also looking for part time job opportunities and I think it would be more abundant in Sheffield as it it a bigger city. What should I choose?

I agree that I think Exeter is slightly better for Economics (I had a quick look at some economics league tables which seemed to confirm this. As for job opportunities, I live near Sheffield and I know of quite a lot of people with part-time jobs and I have seen quite a few vacancies available.

Hope this helps

Hi MinRock,

Congratulations on your offer at the University of Exeter!

You can find out more about our degrees on our website, including the course page here, and department pages for both our Business School and Politics. As already mentioned in this thread, Exeter is particularly well ranked for Economics, recently winning Business School of the Year in 2023 and ranking especially highly for Graduate Prospects. Our Politics department also does very well too, and was recently ranked top 100 in the world in the QS World University Subject Rankings.

Exeter has a lot of part-time employment opportunities for students, including roles on campus (such as being a student ambassador, working in the campus shop or bar) and also around the city. As a popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer, there are lots of roles in hospitality that regularly employ student workers. It can be quite a popular strategy to stay in the city through the summer and work to earn money to help support yourself through the following academic year. At the University of Exeter, you'll get access to the Career Zone, which will regular host job fairs - not only for part-time work, but also internships and grad schemes / graduate-level jobs. They also offer lots of skills workshops and can help you with tasks such as writing a CV or cover letter, interviewing technique and building your LinkedIn profile.

You might find it useful to use the Unibuddy platform on our website here to chat to current students to find out more about life on campus and their experiences on the degree. You can filter by subject, and so for example you might be interested in messaging Thando to gain insight into their experiences of studying Economics.

I hope that's helpful, but let me know if you have any further questions I can help with. Best of luck with your decision, and I hope you succeed whichever university you ultimately decide upon.

Hi MinRock,
I am a current Sheffield student studying Cancer Biology and Therapeutics. I can't comment on Economics directly, but there's lots of advantages to the course at Sheffield including the opportunity to do a placement year. This is great for gaining work experience, which is very helpful once you graduate! Economics graduates also have excellent career prospects with 94% of Sheffield's economics graduates in 2020 being in employment or further study 15 months after leaving University (2020-21 Graduate Outcomes Survey).

In terms of part-time jobs, lots of people have a part-time job whilst at uni. In Sheffield, quite a lot of my friends work at local pubs/restaurants or at Meadowhall. So, there is definitely the availability there. You can also apply to work within the Student's Union too, such as in Bar One or Coffee Revolution. The Student's Union also usually puts on a careers fair which includes part-time jobs as well!

I hope this helped. Let me know if there's any other questions I can answer for you,
Sofia
