The Science Behind Fizzy Drinks: Why Do They Fizz? 🥤💨

Ever wondered why your favorite soda fizzes when you open the bottle? It’s all about carbon dioxide (CO₂) and pressure!

Soft drinks are carbonated by dissolving CO₂ gas under high pressure. When you open the bottle, the pressure suddenly drops, and the gas escapes, forming bubbles—this is called effervescence. The fizz you love is actually a result of a chemical equilibrium shifting!

But here’s something interesting:
Did you know that adding salt or sugar to a fizzy drink makes it fizz even more? That’s because these tiny particles provide nucleation sites, where CO₂ bubbles form rapidly, creating an overflowing foam effect!

💭 What do you think? Have you ever tried dropping salt into soda? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Stay tuned for more fun chemistry facts! 😊
I’ve never tried putting salt into fizzy drinks. Probably because I don’t drink fizzy drinks.

I wonder why mentos male drinks fizz more though.

The mentos act as a sort of nucleation site for bubbles - energetically, it’s much easier for bubbles to form on the highly porous surface of the mentos than in the liquid itself and so the evolution of gas from it occurs much more readily.

I’ve also never tried adding salt to fizzy drinks as it sounds wasteful, but I’d predict a similar outcome for precisely the same reasons.

I see. Does the mentos have lots of sugar then?

I’d guess so - though the pores in the surface probably aren’t all sugar crystals.

I have no idea what pores are but fair.

Imperfections in the surface - like little dents and holes (though not very visible to the human eye in this instance)

Got it thanks.
