Should I choose French, Spanish, or both!?

For my gcses I'm only allowed to choose 3-4 subjects. I'm pretty settled on choosing a language, art and possibly economics (don't ask why I chose the sudden change >∆<) but the thing is, it's probably better if I do business studies as well as economics. Tbh in the end I'll prolly not do economics at all but I'm not sure if doing both languages is the right thing, since both of them are kinda similar. I hope sm1 also has a similar problem so I'm not the only 1 here just worrying ´A`。

I'd personally avoid doing both. in year 11 rn, and i only take spanish (french is the bane of my existence, i was more than happy to let that go), but i have some friends who do both french and spanish. one of them had a french speaking mock last week, ended up speaking a bit of spanish during it due to the similar questions. it tends to be slightly confusing because the courses are very similar so you learn similar bits of vocab, so unless you're amazing at languages and really enjoy them, it's probably easier to only do one

in terms of picking between french and spanish, i mean i do spanish so im pretty biased to that lol, but in general i've heard less people in our year complain against spanish than french, although it honestly depends on what you find easiest, what you enjoy more, how good the teachers are etc.

hope this helped

I took both, so I'm biased and I say do it if you feel ready to take it. Whichever choice you make, it will not define your future. Confusing the languages is of course possible but the benefit of the similarity of the grammar and vocab outweighs that drawback in my opinion

this goes less so for all the other subjects, but for languages (and art asw), only do it if you really want to and really enjoy it. there's a different skill with learning languages, where, unlike sciences, geo, histo, etc, instead of memorising facts, you actually need to understand how it works in order to do anything.

if you're sure of doing a language, do whichever you enjoy. if you like them both, do both. but - some of my friends do both and they get mixed up all the time. i only do spanish (easy choice for me) and love it. could i do french as well? yes. would i like it? maybe. would i get a 9? no.

also the culture is an important element imo. i love spanish/latinx culture so that was another factor for me

I do both French and Spanish. I also did mandarin a year early and got a 9. In my opinion, if u have a passion for it, it’s really easy to achieve. Generally, I don’t mix the languages up and if I do it’s very rare and only maybe an accent on a word. For me, picking both has been the best decision. I am now hoping to do both for a level along with maths.

As long as u pick what u think u enjoy, you will be fine. If u wanted to tho u could check A level requirements for the subject. eg u might not need economics gcse if u want to do it in the future.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about anything!

i took two languages and strongly recommend doing both if you have an interest and think you'll enjoy them both.

Usually, they leave a couple of weeks between language speaking exams and so that should help to reduce the mixing them up part.

Also, the fact the exam styles are similar will help too.
