career advice - what to do if i have no passion?

I’m currently in year 11 and have no idea what career to do. I’ve picked bio chem and maths for my a level options as I am thinking about medicine, but i’m not sure if i’m going to enjoy it. I don’t know what else to do besides law, finance, or medicine however none of these are my passions/something i really want to do. Can anyone give me advice for this please??

Perhaps try finding any sort of work experience related to these careers and see whether you enjoy it or not. Ask current students about what they like/dislike about the course to see if it helps you. Also for A- levels, if you're unsure, I suggest definitely doing a science as it opens many doors, and maybe an essay type subject if you are considering law. Hope this helps!!

Whatever you do, do not start and then complete a degree within a subject you have no interest in and absolutely no intention of ever working in. That is madness.

You should consider Natural Sciences as it is a good science-y degree if you are undecided. You can also enter a graduate medicine course, if you change your mind.

If not, perhaps Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). It is one of the widest courses that you can lean towards many career opportunities. Good luck

Hi!

I was in the same boat as you at one point, doing biology, chemistry, psychology and geography a levels, with no idea what I wanted to do as my degree or career. I am currently studying Zoology at the university of Southampton and loving it. I even switched from biology in first year, and it's nice to remember your options are never completely closed off.

I did lots of online work experience and research into lots of different options and I think this is a great way to decide on a career path - the great thing with online work experience is that you can do lots at once!
If you have decided you want to go to uni, then I would also suggest going to lots of open days and speaking to students, getting to know their opinions on what they do. Considering options like apprenticeships is also important - and see if your school / college has any resources to help you find out more.
I hope this can help - feel free to ask any more questions, and remember not to worry that you don't have a complete plan yet - there are lots of people that feel the same.

Hi thank you so much for the advice!! It's good to know that I'm not alone on this situation. I was not aware online work experience was a thing, and will definitely be trying that soon. Could I also have any useful websites/resources to search for different careers please? Many thanks!

For online work experience I think springpod has some good opportunities (you can find more here: https://www.springpod.com/virtual-work-experience/search) and also looking through MOOCs to see what might interest you (https://www.mooc.org/courses)
Hope this can help!
