Reapply to Cambridge G100. Asking for suggestions!

hi
I'm a 17-year-old Chinese applicant who have just got pool-rejection from Selwyn College for mathematics (with predicted 3A* in math, further math, physics and double 1 in STEP2&3 in advance, TMUA 8.4)
I didn't expect this result since my interview was alright (did seven questions in total and had a nice communication with professors)
well I am still in profound disappointment now, waiting for my feedback and planning to reapply
any recommendation for college? I'm planning to select one from Magd/sidney/St John's/christ's (but not sure whether they are reapply friendly)
I think I will achieve all 4A* (including a chemistry) as well as stepSS this May & June.
and I also wonder if retaking my as physics would bring me with any disadvantages ( does Cambridge mind that??)
plz give me some suggestions! thank you so much!

And I also would be really happy if anyone can give me some suggestions on what to do during the gap year (except for achieving my a-level and STEP grades), and how I should improve my personal statement and interviewing skills

I'm very sorry and I hope you're okay. On a little side step, people say you should wait at least a few months, if not till August to decide to reapply. Have you considered how you'll feel and what you would do if you get rejected again? Is a gap year really going to benefit you? Especially for maths because they would need evidence you're still working at the same level as you were at a level given maths skills stagnate really fast without frequent practice. I'm also assuming you've applied to 4 other universities - please consider them too. You'll be an asset to any university you go to and maybe other places will be better for you: for example imperial prepare you for industry and getting a job, bath often teach programming as part of their courses and endless other pros to different universities. I know it's not the question you asked just hoping you've considered all of this. 🙂

To be honest, I've been dreaming of studying mathematics in Cambridge and then getting engaged in academic research in theoretical physics since several years ago. During my spare time in y10&11, I previewed the part IA courses by myself and I find that the courses in Cambridge suits me well. Additionally, I visited Cambridge in December and I really love the atmosphere there.
It may sound crazy that I shifted my gears to a-levels at the end of April, 2024, while before that I spent
all my efforts in preparation for Chinese National College Entrance Exam for about eleven years. And it's true that I've struggled and sacrificed a lot for this decision. I know that Cambridge may not be the best place for me and there are many other good options, but i don't want to have any regrets. So from the very beginning when I decided to give up NCEE, I've planned to reapply if I failed this year.

i think a gap year can give me more time to enhance my academic background, and also i will keep on previewing the university courses. However, yeah i do need to take some reconsiderations on that beacuse i may not in a good psychological state for a gap year...and the first thing i need to do is to get out of the loss...
hope that everything will be fine soon!

Okay it sounds like you have got some kind of a plan! With the initial question, Cambridge are very aware that people often reapply so any college will do as long as it's different to the first one. For all the colleges you've mentioned, it's worth looking at how they consider resits on the website/ by contacting admissions. But, I have very little knowledge of this stuff and it may be worth putting these questions on the Cambridge rejection/ deselection thread (I don't have the link but I'm sure it'll come up if you search it) where people in similar situations and people with better advice can help. In the mean time probably focus on getting those A*s! I wish you the best of luck! 🍀

I was a gap year applicant for Sidney Sussex. In terms of what to do, it's broadly the same as for normal applicants but you should make it very clear what you are planning to do in your gap year should you take one. Note you may be asked to sit STEP again in your gap year (up to the discretion of the college) to ensure you don't go 'off the boil'.

Chinese and Engineering offer-holder here.

I'm sorry to hear that and I hope you're ok. Your academic background seems very strong for Cam so I don't see any reason for the outcome. Maybe it's due to luck? If you're determined, do try again and see how it goes.
