No amount of time is a waste if it gets you where you want to be.

What if you was planning to get married at 23

That is your decision - and not one that anyone else can or should offer you advice about.

You don’t need to be a qualified optometrist to get married.

Hi @Anonymous

Graduating at the age of 25 years-old isn't bad at all - in fact, it is great! It is fantastic that you know what you'd like to pursue as a career in your twenties. It sounds like you have worked really hard to get where you are today, so congratulations! It is surprisingly common how many students don't have a linear route to university nowadays. You may find your life experience helps with your course and means you can relate to your patients even more.

You will find that there are plenty of mature students studying a variety of courses at university, I will be graduating later this year and I am in my thirties. Healthcare courses often have more mature students, therefore even if you are one of the older students on your course as soon as you begin working as an optometrist you will find you are working with people of all ages.

Have you met any other mature students during your studies? If not and you would like to, then it is worth seeing if your university has a Mature Students society or a way of connecting mature students. I regularly attend the Mature Students Society at my university which has been a great way to meet other mature students and I have made some great friends.

Best of luck with the rest of your studies.

No But The Job Market is Challenging. So Best of Luck.
Graduating at any age is great!
Hello, I graduated at 25 for a bunch of reasons did a foundation year (home problems) , took a year out due to health reasons, did a year in industry placement, just graduated in july 2024 and a few days ago got a called and secured a role in a graduate scheme starting in september.

I will be 26 by then and I too am worried that'll i'll be in a scheme with probably 21-22 year olds, however meeting people at AC's were all in the same boat and work is work at the end of the day i've made friends at work from all different ages and there will be older people there. I've even spoken to people on this website very recently who are also graduating in their mid 20's theres nothing wrong with it.

Yes you may feel like you've had to grow up a bit later than others (PHDs often feel this way especially if they lack 'real' work experience), but does it matter if you get to do/become what you want? We need more information to answer this question such as why do you feel its late, is it because you wanted to be more established in your career path or like others mentioned is it about marriage/kids etc?

I wouldn't even consider you a 'mature' student if you started your studies before 25.

Anyway regardless it's not bad at all but i understand all your fears perhaps if you elaborated on them we'd be able to help more. However from someone whos graduated at 25 and just got onto a graduate scheme it feels great 🙂

Quote of the day that
I'm not in a medical degree but I'm 41 and I'll be graduating this year. I'll be 43 when I graduate from my masters.

Why is that ?

Why is that ?

I graduated when I was 22 and ever since then it’s been 3 years but the market has been challenging in finding a graduate role. I am considering switching a career switch because I can find anything within my field.

Wow 3 years is crazy , and you don’t have a job ? If you don’t mind me asking where abouts are you located . But to be honest that’s like saying it’s going to be challenging for anyone who graduates
Do you really think so? But I don't
