How do decide between 2 degrees?

Hi! My name is Julia and I’m a year 12 (so I know I’ve still got quite a bit of time but I was wondering how to decide and if someone was once in a similar position and how they decided?) I’m totally stuck between doing a biomedical sciences degree or a vet med degree. When I started sixth form I was convinced I was going to be a vet, I LOVE animals and science, and had done work experience where I watched surgeries and loved it. But at the same work experience vets had told me to not become one because it was their biggest regret in life and their life is so stressful, badly paid, clients are horrible etc. So to say the least it worries me a bit.
I’d always loved immunology/disease biology so I did consider biomedicine multiple times within my life but I assumed it was the sort of degree you get no jobs after so I never fully considered it the same way I am now. I’m fascinated by this side of biology and feel like I would enjoy the degree so much but would I find a job and if I did would I enjoy it? (In contrast I think the studying bit of the vet degree would be horrible but the job appeals to me more.. I think?). I’ve also been volunteering for almost 2 years at a cat shelter.
So does anybody know how to decide? Has anybody also experienced being torn between 2 degrees and how did you end up deciding?
Thanks so much for reading!

Vets are not underpaid, sounds like these vets are just in a tough position. It seems like you are pretty set on vet med and you shouldn't let someone else's experience put you off of that.
As for biomed, you are correct. There are no jobs in biomed right now, as you need years of experience you cannot get without a job, so all the jobs are snapped up by the experienced people.
Vet med is a hard course to get in to, you should be fine in the ways of volunteering and work experience but you'd have to get high grades in the sciences and your other a level(s). I'm sure you know this but a minimum of A's, preferably A*'s would be the best to have.
Best of luck!

Hi there!

I was also torn a little between two degrees (computer science and psychology). What helped me decide in the end was looking at the bigger picture - I loved psychology but was worried there'd be little to no career opportunities after graduating. I learnt that actually isn't the case - there's just a lot of further study needed. I'd been pushed towards doing computer science because it was a stable and good career path, but over time I stopped enjoying it and that solidified my choice.

I'd recommend maybe going to an open day or two, and talking to some current students from both courses if you can. Sometimes at open days, you'll be able to meet the academics from each course area, and have a chat with them, sometimes there'll be taster sessions you can attend too (depending on the university). Speaking to some people who are actually studying the courses you're torn between might help you lean more towards one than the other

It seems like you're more interested in becoming a vet, and you've got some really great experience too. Don't let one person's advice put you off - it just might be that specific practise where the vets feel underpaid. Maybe reach out to another vets if you are able to and ask to shadow them, maybe their opinions will be different!

Hope this helps🤗

Hi there,

You've had some great advice already!

I just wanted to make you aware of a feature many universities have, which allows you to chat to current students. It can be super helpful to learn from those currently studying what you're interested in. It might be useful for you to get an idea of why they chose it, how they are finding it, and what their plans are after they graduate, which may give you a clearer idea of the path you'd like to take.

If you have any universities you're particularly interested in (or just any!), search their name + 'chat to a student', I'm sure you'll be able to find it.

I hope this helps! 🙂

Hi @Oopsjulia ,

It can be tricky deciding between two different degrees when you have a few things that you are interested in and you would like doing!

I would say that open days are quite a good way of deciding what you want to do. This is a good way of asking lectures about the subject and seeing if it was something you would enjoy. You can also have a look around facilities and this is a good way of deciding too.

Another way of deciding would be to see if you can do any volunteer work in either field as this way you can see what it is is like working in this area and this may help you to decide what you would like to do too.

I hope some of this helps 🙂

Compared to other professions with an equivalent level of study vets are most definitely are underpaid. Their hourly pay rate IS low but given that they do incredibly long hours their absolute level of pay is above average. Although a vet will start at around 30K the level of salary progression is very slow and if you were to compare the salary of a GP and a vet after 10 years in the job market the GP will earn roughly 40% more.
That being said people choose to be a veterinary surgeon by vocation and not for the salary which is, all the same, far from leaving them on the breadline.
