Where to find work experience in computer science?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Year 12 student currently studying Maths, Further Maths, and Computer Science, and I’m looking for work experience in the field of Computer Science from July 7–10, 2025 as part of my school’s program.

I’m particularly interested in software development, AI, cryptography, and data science, but I’m open to any relevant opportunities. I’ve been exploring company websites and LinkedIn but haven’t had much luck finding structured placements.

Does anyone know of any companies, programs, or other resources that offer work experience for students? Or does anyone have tips on how to reach out to professionals for shadowing opportunities?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Do some research on small/medium businesses in the area and contact them.

Have you considered using your network as well? Friends, family, family friends etc. They may be able to line something up for you.

Please ask your school for help. If they can't, you can still check the UK gov Apprenticeships website to see which employers are offering apprenticeships and summer internships.

Girls Who Code Charity is an American organization that offers virtual summer schools in collaboration with big companies. I did it two years ago when the summer school was based on game development with Morgan Stanley. It was truly such an incredible experience, a main point I wrote in my final personal statement.
