A Levels VS IB (Decision Soon)

I am currently in year 11 and have to choose between A Level and IB for the next 2 years. I am interested in maths and physics, and likely am thinking of doing something along those lines in university either in the UK or US, but not 100% sure yet. I currently have got straight 9s in my mock (I)GCSEs, so my teachers have advised me that I will do well in both IB or A levels. My school is also one of the top IB schools so has a really good average and teachers, and the structured nature of the course seems really good but I'm worried it's a lot of work. However, I also do like the idea of being more well rounded at the end, although I don't enjoy english.

If I do A levels, my subjects will be:
Maths, Further Maths, Physics and probably Economics for a 4th (not super sure)

If I do IB, my subjects will be
HL: Maths, Physics, Chemistry,
SL: English, French, Economics
(might swap around chem and econ as not super sure about those)

Would appreciate any advice as I'm super confused on what to do and my decision is really soon

Hi there, congratulations with your amazing mock results!!!, I don’t know a lot about IB however I am in my final year of a levels currently studying bio, chem and maths! I would be aware that, for maths, it is a very big step up from gcse and I really struggled (as I didn’t do further maths gcse) however if you are aware of this from the beginning (which I wasn’t 😬) I’m sure you will do great in either IB or a level and I soon got used to the difficulty!!! Also if you are applying to universities, maybe have a look if each university has a preference as I don’t think many do but could be worth looking into!! As well, if your school is better equipped for IB, then that may be another factor to consider!!! I’m sorry if this doesn’t help and I’m sure whichever decision you make you will do great!!!

Hiya, I do the IB. Higher levels the same as you, I just do psychology instead of economics. I absolutely love it and it's definitely prepared me more for uni than my A level friends. However, it is lots of work! They have loads of time off during the day to do work and I have a full timetable, working every evening in year 2 to keep up.
I'm not sure I would change my mind if I chose again though, I'd be bored just doing maths and sciences.

It depends on how much you can achieve. A 45/45 is regarded higher than a A*A*A*. I'll give you an example for how UCL converts them.
43~45 = A*A*A*
42 = Right in between A*A*A* and A*A*A
39~41 = A*A*A

If you plan on achieving 42 or lower, I would reccommend A levels. If you want to maximize chances at oxbridge, ICL, LSE (econ and finance), UCL (Management/Law), I would choose IB.

That's actually not true, 45/45 is equivalent to 5 x A* and 40/45 is 4 x A*. Cambridge and oxford offer between 40-42. Most are between 36-39. St Andrews is 36-38. Warwick is 39.

Most people with 9s and a few 8s at GCSE get between 40 and 45.
Hope that helps.

thanks so much mate I think i'm gonna go with the IB. Think i'm definitely trying to maximise my chances as djafidajfiajf said so hopefully it all works out and I guess there's potential to do much better with IB, so we'll see. thanks to everyone for your inputs, really helped my decision coz i was super back and forth lol

also, what are you planning on doing in uni (if you know already)? I have the potential to do psychology as only a higher but i've never done it before, would you recommend it over chem?

No,keep Chem. I am doing maths and psychology but I had more doors open with Chem as higher.

IB student here, if you already know what you wanna do in uni, do A-levels; they are easier and get the same recognition.
