HELP- do i drop core maths - advice need (dentistry)

hi, i do applied science i did ok in my gcses like mostly 7s and a few 6s an ive only now decided i want to do density and bristol accepts btec applied science for it but i know how competative it is to get in. its too late for me to take a level maths and when i told my teacher he said "an extra a level wont help for ur application. so since new years ive took core maths bcause apprently it helps with UCAT which i was told to focus on. but my teacher is kinda bad, its not that its hard its so stupidly easy like u just cbb with it and now idk whether to keep it or not, or if itll help with UCAT maths side or if itll make my grades look better with a extra "A" on im really confused what would Bristol want. do i drop core maths and teach myself or force myself to keep going to it (also for gcses i got a 7 in maths if that helps)
thanks
cece

For basically any degree in medicine or dentistry (they are almost the same so are grouped), you need minimum 3 a-levels at usually an A unless the uni state lower on their website. Out of these A-levels, they usually want Chemistry and one of Biology or Physics and sometimes maths, then the third A-level is your choice.
Dentistry is obviously a very competitive course as it is around 1 in 8 get an offer and all of the applicants have all A's at gcse/a-level
What A-levels are you taking now?

Hi Cece,

Dentistry is a fantastic choice <3

So, there's A LOT to unpack there! I too, decided last minute that I wanted to be a doctor. It doesn't help to have an awful teacher either :frown:

Here's what I would do personally:

Contact the University of Bristol & speak to them about your situation

Go onto an access course (what some people do)

In terms of dropping Core Maths, that's quite a difficult decision to make. What I'll do is I'll speak to someone at my university & see what their advice is. If you do A Level Maths, it may strengthen your application more honestly.

My uni doesn't have a dentistry course to the best of my knowledge, but I'll speak to the health department regardless & see what they say.

Kind regards,

Just to add, Core Maths would strengthen it too.
