Gcse maths retake

Hi I am currently in year 12 studying psychology, business and politics and I am wanting to pursue psychology at university. However at GCSES I sat maths foundation and I had got a 5 but for most of the psychology courses at Russle group universities are looking for a 6 in GCSE maths. I’m wondering if I retake maths and aim for a higher grade, will this affect my position at entering one of those universities.

It will impact your position, yes. You will be in a much stronger position with respect to universities which require applicants to have a GCSE grade 6. They won't care that you had to retake it to secure the required grade.

You will get an immediate rejection if you apply without specified GCSE grades.
Unis do not mind if you retake vital GCSEs - no, it won't disadvantage your applications.

Hi thanks for your reply, so I’m thinking of sitting the higher maths this summer but if I wanted to could I sit it in November instead or would this affect my application? Like would it be too late for it to be changed. And also if I did sit the higher maths and got a lower grade than I did in my foundation maths would it be changed to the lower grade?

You will be at the beginning of Year 13 then, so it won't be too late at all.

When you apply to universities you are required to enter details of each attempt you've made at a particular qualification. So nothing will change. They'll see your original grade 5, plus whatever you get from your November attempt - hopefully a 6!

When is it that we start filling our applications?

The earliest date upon which you'll be able to submit a completed application to UCAS is 2nd September. The "equal consideration" deadline is 14 January. See this page on the UCAS web site for confirmation.

However, note that you don't have to have sat your exam, or even received your results, by the time you apply. You simply list the fact that you're going to sit the exam, and if a uni wants to make you an offer they include the required GCSE Maths grade as a condition of the offer.

I don't believe that they've announced the date by which the results of GCSEs resat in November 2025 will be released, other than saying it'll be in January 2026.

Ideally, it'll be before 14 January, so you know where you stand when you submit your application.
