Durham Colleges

Hello! I’m planning on going to Durham for Natsci and was wondering what the best located college is for this course.
I also would prefer to be self-catered and therefore near some shops and any info about hills, SU, train station etc. would also be useful!
I’ve had a look online but no one really talks about the colleges in terms of location.

Thanks for your help )

Self catered and near a shop is unfortunately an uncommon combination in Durham (there are plans to build a shop near the self catered colleges but I think they are for 2026)
I'm not sure if Hild Bede is doing self catered next year (they historically are catered but they are rebuilding their college so they have been self catered while that's been going on), they are probably in the best location for a shop if so. Otherwise, Cuths self catered accomodation is close to town.
After that there's the main 4 self catered colleges which are on the hill - which is nearer the nat sci lectures, but unfortunately not near any shops

ahh okay thank you ! i'll have to sacrifice one or the other by the looks of things. I'm not sure whether to just go catered but I like the flexibility that comes with self-catered. And if I'm not near a shop I might get fed up pretty fast lol .
Thank you so much for your reply, it was really helpful

Hiya,

I would focus on colleges close to the science site if you're looking for location (not necessarily where your department is) as most of your lectures will be on the science site or upper Mountjoy. Unfortunately, most self catered colleges are the hill colleges and they're not really close to town; however Durham is easily walkable and there are so many buses that go up to hill colleges if you're needing something from town. St Cuthbert's Society does have a self catered accommodation in old elvet which is 10 mins walking distance from Tesco so it is quite conveniently located and 10 mins to the science site as well as the SU, it might be worth having a look at 🙂 I'll leave a link to some online blogs/resources to have a look at that may help with choosing colleges:

Help! How do I pick a college? The Durham Student
So, what are Durham’s Colleges all about? The Durham Student
What you need to know about the undergraduate collegiate system The Durham Student

Hope this helps!
