I know 3 people now who work for DWP and have years of experience covering for this and even higher grade roles and they also got 3 and not progressed to interview. They are devastated but what is becoming apparent to me is Civil Service does not reward hard work and there is zero progression chances from within compared to other professions. I taught for 6 years and got promoted for 4 of those 6 years into leadership roles. Please do not take it personally as it got nothing to do with your suitably and everything to do with broken recruitment system at Civil Service.

The Civil Service is becoming competitive as many people are applying now as opposed to 5 years ago. This is the reason why pass marks have to be raised at times. I don’t think it’s a reflection on CS recruitment. Many people apply internally and externally but there are limited jobs, so it’s given on merit basis. Also, each job also has it’s own key criteria. Just because someone’s at a higher or similar grade, doesn’t automatically make them suitable to every other vacancy at the same/below grade. And open and fair recruitment is what makes CS different to other sectors, and possibly this is the reason why it’s so competitive? Don’t you think it’s good that they allow external applicatants the same opportunities rather than offering promotions internally? If that was the case I think it would be even more difficult for external applicants to join the CS.

Interesting perspective.

Whereas it took me in the civil service five years with a single promotions to move into a leadership grade, ie G7.

I had three promotions in 15 years. That took me to a salary equivalent of L28.
