Help idk what I’m doing

I don’t have a single clue or idea on what career path I want to do. In struggling a lot nothing appeals to me. I don’t find anything interesting. In a 20yr studying fashion business and management and I HATE IT so much. I’ve changed my course so many times from textile to fashion to Csi crime scene investigation to now landing into fashion haziness and management. In currently in my second year and I have no clue what I’m doing with my self and my course. No one is giving me good advice enough. My friends are saying there no point changing or dropping out bc I’m in my second year and I have other saying you should have picked a different course back then. I DIDNT KNOW WHAT I WANTED TO DO. The reason why I’m doing uni in the first place is to show that I have a degree in not really bothered about not getting one. I was thinking of starting an Islamic glass art business just as a side job tho. Pls help or if you have any advice please let me know. Help yah gurl out 😩:frown:

Hi there,
Have you got a careers advisors at your university or a student hub. If you have linked in maybe talk to post grads who are doing something you might be interested in and see how they got there. Islamic glass art sounds like an amazing skill, doing something you love makes you more motivated to continue it. Have you thought about art? Or could you go on a art (non-degree) course and see if you like it alongside your degree.
All the best,
Emily

Hi there,

It's fairly normal to not know what exactly you want to do as a career, or when you pick your course at uni. However, since you are in your second year now, it's a good idea to start talking to people at your uni/others about what you might want to do and what you can do.

I agree that if you have a careers or employability team at your uni, they are good people to talk to and should be able to hope you out with some ideas and options of what you might want to do. If you talk to them about some things that you are interested in, they may be able to help you out with some ideas of what could be good career paths and can help you with what your degree will help you with. Some things you might have just not thought of before, so it is worth asking and seeing if they have any good ideas!

You may also be able to do a few more things with your degree than you might have thought of. Or, it may be worth staying at uni and completing your degree as this way you at least have a degree (now you have done half of it) and you may be able to get a job from this. Or, there are sometimes conversion courses which I know can feel quite long but it might be quicker than a degree apprenticeship/similar.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

Hi there,

I just want to reassure you and let you know it is completely fine to not know what you want to do! I still don't, and I'm now in my final year. For some of us, it isn't totally obvious, but as long as we are still working towards something it's okay!

Talking with the Careers and Employability team at your university would definitely be a great start. They can help you to map out the things you know you do enjoy (and cut out the things you know you hate!), which can be super useful for narrowing it down. They might also suggest things you haven't thought of or don't know much about, such as apprenticeships, alternate degrees, and self-employment.

As it has been said, be sure to research into the not-so-obvious paths your degree can take you down. You might decide it is ultimately worth sticking it out for this, plus the knowledge and skills you'd gain, and the experience of getting a degree. If you decide it really isn't for you, that is okay too!

Remember that we all follow different paths. It might feel daunting to be feeling this way and doing something different to your peers, but you have to choose what is right for you!

I hope this helps, and best of luck to you. 🙂
