ESAT for Cambridge vet school

Hi! My name is Julia and I’m in year 12 at the moment studying biology chemistry history, maths and epq. (This is a bit of context for the question) I’m considering dropping maths but still doing an AS level in it so dropping it so I don’t have it in year 13. I’m also considering dropping history instead of maths BUT I am better and always have been better in history and my teacher is completely convinced I will get an A* which is why I don’t think I should drop it over maths.

I’ve been considering Cambridge vet school and had a brief look at the entrance exam, and it is VERY maths heavy. I was wondering if anybody had possibly gotten an offer for Cambridge vet school without doing maths a level? Or if someone knows/has advice about preparing for the ESAT without maths a level. I’m not sure why there’s such a big emphasis on maths a level considering that you are allowed to have biology chemistry and a third of your choice. Basically, any advice on ESAT and should I not even be considering sitting it if I decide to drop maths a level (considering the fact I will still have as level!!)
Thank you!!

If you want to apply for Vet Med you should keep Maths, not History.

Thanks for the reply but I’ve chosen to stay with history now! I think it was the right decision and I know lots of people who have gone to vet school with the same a levels as me.

Hey, to make you feel more confident with your decision and to answer some of your other questions, I do biology, chemistry and product design a level (I didn’t do As maths) and I currently have 2 offers to study veterinary medicine (Nottingham and Cambridge)! Literally no vet school except Cambridge care about your 3rd subject! Cambridge does give offers to those who don’t do maths or physics as their third a level but I think they put more emphasis on past achievement in maths and physics as well as the esat.

Specifically on the ESAT, it’s supposed to be all based on GCSE maths content (I don’t believe that lol) but I think AS maths would set you up well as that’s all most people have done by the beginning of October (when you have to sit it). As for what I did, I did a lot of past NSAA questions and went over GCSE content (I also had a couple of tutoring sessions), I didn’t do anything too crazy but I wish I’d started preparing over summer because it was a lot to fit in around A level content + writing ps!

Also if you really like Cambridge, the best thing to do would be to email the colleges you like to see if they would prefer you to do AS maths and how they’d view history!
Hopefully this helps! 💕🦦

i got an offer this year and i do bio, chem and geography  i also did badly on the maths ESAT section (1.4) but i think they contextualised my score as they knew i didn’t take maths. it is gcse content but it is supposed to be super difficult so the best way to prepare is definitely just practice papers

Please don't believe rumours that ESAT is based on GCSE content.

if you look at the specification online, all of the maths content that you can be tested on within the esat is gcse content. but the difficulty of the questions is far harder than gcse
