Cambridge college admission assessment for Maths

Hi,

I have seen from the Cambridge Uni's website that only three colleges, i.e., Churchill, King’s and St Edmund’s, asked Maths applicants last year to take an assessment. My questions are:
1) will the assessment outcome determine your interview inviation, i.e., the assessment will pre-screen applicants? If this is the case, then how early the assessment will take place before the interview? And what are the percentages of applicants were invited for an interview?
2) I saw other colleges from their websites, e.g., Trinity and Peterhouse, may also have question papers for applicants to do on the interview day and perhaps before the interview, such that their answers can be discussed during the interview. How are they different from the three colleges with assessments?

Many thanks.

All Cambridge colleges require STEP papers and need certain grade however some colleges offer flexible grade and STEP and grade combinations check out this link https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/mathematics-ba-hons-mmath
Cambridge considers grades, application/PS and assessment grades before inviting for interview and will consider everything in totality before making an offer …..

I can’t answer part 1 of your question, but I am going to Pembroke College for maths this year, and they had me sit a 30 minute paper (consisting of 6 questions, of which I attempted 4) which I then took straight to my interview. I talked through the questions I had answered, and the interviewers prompted me through the 2 I hadn’t been able to answer. My interview itself was about 45 minutes, we had 5 minutes spare at the end for me to ask questions (I just asked about what modules were taught there)

My interview was in person - I imagine the interview process is a little different online and I’m not sure exactly what colleges interview online / in person.

Good luck with your application! x

I checked out the link

Then, I'm curious- Does this mean that some colleges might accept a lower STEP score if the A-level grades are higher?

How are you inferring that?

The basic A level offer is A*A*A and the minimum STEP requirement is 1, 1. You can't get higher than an A*, and you won't get a lower offer than 1, 1 in STEP, although each year not all places are filled by people achieving 1,1 so inevitably some places will be filled by some candidates on the borderline.

No one has to make the grades on offer letter additionally the STEP grades required for Imperial and Cambridge. Other Universities may make lower offers for grades if one sends good STEP grades .. this is my understanding… best to contact the admissions office for clarifications…
