Re-sitting GCSE’s for Dentistry - Is it worth it?

Hello!
I'm currently a year 12 student. I take Biology, Chemistry and Maths for A-levels and I'm extremely keen on pursuing dentistry in the future. However, I feel like there's one thing that is always holding me back, which is my GCSE grades. I got a 77666665 and L2D (B-TECH) and I don't think they're good enough because in the end, I caved to exam pressure. Which inevitably lead to me having a panic attack during one of my exams and just not performing as best as I hoped. It was a whirlwind.

However, I'd say I'm on track with my A-Levels and could do even better with even more push. Would getting a good UCAT scores and A-Levels be enough to compensate for my low GCSE's? or is it just completely a deal breaker if I don't have outstanding GCSE scores? On top of this though I also have extracurriculars. I do volunteering work weekly for a charity ; I do Student Ambassador (Where I help out in a class, Biology, during my free period) weekly ; I'm part of 6th form student council and a school committee group which promotes diversity and inclusivity. (We deliver assemblies occasionally, and I helped deliver an assembly for Black history month). I've also recently done work experience at a Dental practice.

Nonetheless, no matter what I do I still feel like it isn't to enough! and that no schools would even consider my application because of my GCSE's grades. So, I've been thinking about re-sitting as a final resort but I also heard that many schools don't really accept retakes unless it 'specific circumstances' and now I can't help but feel demoralised and stressed. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? i.e Universities which aren't GCSE heavy? Please let me know!

Since you got panic attacks if you have any evidence from your secondary school / sixthform / doctor note perhaps the unis can take this into account when they consider your GCSEs, for my GCSEs I had extentuating circumstances which was one of the criteria for a contextual offer for leeds so you can try look into stuff like that

For mine my teacher just put it down in my reference box what happened during GCSEs (although I never informed the actual exam board but my secondary school and college was aware of my disruption + I had a hospital discharge letter though they never asked for it)

So far, I think that Newcastle doesn't put too much emphasis on GCSE's. I'm not too sure, Still need to do further research. Also, One university I think that don't require 8's/9's for GCSE is KCL (I was looking at their website and I saw that GCSE requirements were 6+ in English and Maths).

As for predicted grades, For my school at the start of the year on the first report they base it on what you accomplished in your GCSE's and on class assessments. But, in the summer your mocks will be used for your predicted grades.

Currently, Yes I am technically doing 'AS levels' because my mock will be a AS paper. But I do A-Levels. I'm also planning on taking on an EPQ. (:

I've never gone to a doctor in regards to my anxiety during exam season, and I also didn't really inform my parents about the panic attack I had during my exams because lets say they are a little traditional. However, I did have our school's exam officer and one of our deputy heads go witness the incident and come out with me during that exam. Do you think it's worth asking them?

Hi I’m not 100% sure but if you feel that it disrupted your GCSEs it’s worth asking them, I went to hospital right before my GCSEs which is why leeds considered my circumstances so I think it does depend on how severe it was but idk

You could also try emailling the admission team of unis who only lets you resit in specific circumstances, explain your situation about your GCSEs and see if they’d be ok if you resat them. I remember emailing universities about my extenuating circumstances if they’d consider it and they all responded to me

I was in a similar position to you last year, however rather than having weak GCSEs I had a weak ucat below average so I applied to unis who prioritised GCSEs and didn’t place much emphasis on ucat

It’s important that you focus on getting a strong ucat so that it makes up for having weaker GCSEs (your GCSEs aren’t ‘weak’ in the sense that they’re bad but GCSE heavy unis tend to have applicants with straight 8/9s applying if ykwim)

Look on the UKCAT People + Uni websites and aim to apply to universities that do not look at your GCSEs once you have hit the gcse requirements. Good luck!
