People skills and a knowledge of first aid. First aid training (FAW) and volunteer first aid cover at events through charitable services such as St John Ambulance or The Red Cross. Mountain Leadership (Mountain Rescue) Sports training work or event/security employment. Any care home work where interaction with people and patient handling (and includes training in nursing skills)

Hi!
I am applying to PS and medicine. I have done a GP placement and a hospital placement as well as a medics mentoring programme. I was wondering if all of this would be relevant and enough for PS?

Try doing charity work for St John Ambulance or British Heart foundation. That was enough for my cousin to get in.

The more people skills you have the better, and the more work experience and ongoing experience you have of all people in society in their own environment the more you will understand illness and what motivates people to be as they are.

As a medic you have about thirty seconds to 'connect' with someone and they need to be able to trust you totally. They are baring their soul to a complete stranger. Are you that safe pair of hands and the person to whom they want to disclose their worries and how they feel? If they don't you will only get 'half a history' and maybe misdiagnose a case. Do you care?

It is very hard to answer 'Is this enough' because sometimes it is never enough. But you sound to have made some good inroads. Make sure you chat to some newly qualified medics and see what they think now they have been through the meat grinder. How burnt out are they after just a few years on the front line? Good luck.
