Cambridge Reference Letters Issue

Hi everyone,
So, recently I received an offer from Cambridge (MPhil). One of the conditions requires my referees to resubmit their recommendation letters using institutional email addresses.
The problem is that my previous university's email services for the teaching staff are down and may not be restored in the near future. During my application, my referees used their personal email accounts and explained the situation, as instructed in Cambridge’s guidelines.

It gets worse, to complicate matters, one referee has left the university, and the other might be leaving soon, meaning they may not regain access even if services are restored.

Has anyone faced a similar situation or have advice on how to navigate this?

Well, to be fair, the fact that "my previous university's email services for the teaching staff are down and may not be restored in the near future" does sound suspicious. (I'm not saying that it is dodgy, just that it comes across that way.)

I'm sure you're aware that the reason that they ask for institutional email addresses to be used is because some people (not you) could be tempted to produce fake letters of recommendation.

Presumably, the university concerned has an announcement on their web page explaining that they're experiencing a long-term email outage? If so, send Cambridge a link to that. If they don't, then what happens when you try to send an email to a member of teaching staff. Does it disappear into a black hole, or is it returned with some sort of error code which indicates that their whole email service is down? Also, you say that, "email services for the teaching staff are down". What about for administrative staff? Could someone in the admin team perhaps send an email explaining the situation, or forwarding an email from a member of the teaching staff?

Essentially you need to evidence the fact that the university's email system is down, and then ask Cambridge what alternatives they would accept. Perhaps they'd accept it printed on university headed paper, for example.

It's a benefit if they leave. An email from a different institutional address will be fine, it's still demonstrably form someone who works from home a uni and is reporting they knew you from a different uni.

Hello, I find myself in a similar position for one of my referees, did the university give you an alternative solution ?

The options will be - an email address from the same person, but at a different academic institution will be fine, or choose another referee.

The point of a reference is that someone is putting their professional reputation up against the statement they are giving about an individual's capability. The pragmatic test of whether someone has a professional reputation is an academic email address. But the institution doesn't matter, neither does the individual really.
