Mental Health Nurse

Hi,

I am currently in my first year of mental health nursing and I think I want to convert to adult nursinf as the physical aspect of nursing is something I am finding really interesting.

Is it possible to switch to adult nursing? Or can you be an adult nurse once qualified as a mental health nurse?

Any advice would be great, thank you.

Hi,
Many unis offer a dual course in nursing where you become qualified in 2 fields so you could speak to your uni and see if they offer this so you could easily transfer.
Many unis also offer 1-2 year post grad courses to qualify in another field of nursing (however you may not get the same loans for postgraduate as you currently do so please research)

If you are losing interest completely and don't wish to qualify as a mental health nurse contact your uni to switch. For a lot of unis the first year is the basic fundamentals of nursing that can be applied to all fields as such you may be able to switch. If not you could always consider restarting in September. Many unis also have a January intake and as such you may be able to join this intake if you contact your uni soon enough. Ultimately you will need to speak to your uni - the sooner the better. I hope this somewhat helped. Good luck!

Once you are qualified as a mental health nurse, you're exactly that - a mental health nurse.
If you'd rather work in the physical health field, speaking to your university about changing course to adult nursing is the best thing to do.

Also, look at Adult & Mental Health Nursing degrees. Southampton University and Kingston University offers this degree. You might be able to transfer the credits from your current course to one of these.
