Norwich or Falmouth for BA illustration?

Hi!
I've been trying to narrow down my choices for university, and I'm currently struggling to decide between NUA and Falmouth for an illustration BA course.

I love Falmouth, I've been to an open day and felt very welcome. Everyone was very attentive, the facilities were very good, and the location is beautiful. I know the course itself has a fantastic reputation and industry links as well. I also love Norwich and the course there, from what I know about it, as I did not have the opportunity to attend an open day there. I like the location as well, although I think I'd rather live in Falmouth, in theory.

Something that's been making my decision difficult is the cost of living in each location. Norwich is far cheaper, and since I'm an EU student, I'd already be paying a lot for university alone. Falmouth, on the other hand, is more expensive. I'm disabled, and do not qualify for the DSA due to not being a UK citizen, and I think that finding work will be difficult for me. Therefore, I'm worried about my budget. Additionally, I'm curious as to how accommodating and supportive these universities actually are, as it does impact my learning and performance...

I love both these universities and courses, and feel like I'd be very happy at either one! However, I'm worried I'll regret my decision later on, if that makes sense? Falmouth was my first choice for a long time, but now I'm not so sure D:

I'd really appreciate any insight from people who've studied or know people who've studied here! Thanks!

Look at the Open Day / Campus Tour films on YouTube :
Norwich University of the Arts - Make it Norwich
Campus Tour | Falmouth University

NUA is a small college with only 3,000 students max. Falmouth is a more traditional sized University with 7,000+ students and consequently has more 'student facilities'.

Hi there!
I'm Charlotte, a y2 Graphic Design student here at Norwich Uni Arts. That's great to hear that you want to study a creative course and that you're considering us 🙂 We have applicant days coming up in March, where you can take part in workshops, look around our campus and speak to staff and current students. This is a great way to get a feel for our uni, and personally helped me in my uni decision making when I was applying.

Also, our subject-specific student ambassadors can be contacted through the UniBuddy platform which you can find here - where you can talk to someone and ask whatever questions you may have.

Likewise, I'm also happy to try and help out where possible.
Good luck in choosing, I know it can be a tough choice!
Charlotte, Student Ambassador 🙂

in literally the same boat - same course (illustration BA) and same top choices (falmouth or norwhich) ! haha!

i absolutely adore the location for the falmouth campus and the amount of beautiful natural landscapes available in cornwall itself. there is something really magical about it that makes me feel really inspired. i additionally feel at home in how "quiet" it is - i'm not fussed about night life. i felt teacher who did my interview gave me more constructive feedback, which speaks to the strength of the course and its output. its no wonder its thought of as one of the highest rated illustration courses in the country. i would really love to live and study there, but it is (like you) the logistics that scare me. being in such a "rural" area i worry i won't be able to find work to support the amount of travel i would have to factor in just to get around each day and get food/necessities. its a much bigger risk, and one i would have to take to see through the outcome, which can be scary as its so far from my current home. norwhich's mix of 'high-street' culture (in the city centre, where the uni is located) and countryside/park areas (in close, walkable proximity) means i get more of a mix of environments, which could provide better support for job prospects, and i don't feel the creative 'spark' (cringe lol) i get from nature is lost.

norwhich is charming and beautiful in its own way and i love the fact most of the facilities/spaces are in old buildings spread out across the city. i did feel like the informality of the interview process (where they basically just love-bomb you and don't give a lot of feedback) was a bit strange. overall, they each feel magical in their own right. i can picture myself being quite satisfied at norwhich but don't want to wake up everyday and wish i had taken the risk to go to falmouth - especially given the high quality of alumni work.

probably doesn't help much, as i've just rambled at my own personal thoughts - but you're not alone ! D:
i wish i could find info thats not from people directly representing the unis (and therefore trying to sell them to me haha)

HI there,
Regarding your last point (which is totally valid), have you tried the UniBuddy platform? It's a great way to be able to talk to students from the universities and courses you're interested in - asking them any questions you may have🙂

Just a thought and hope it helps,
Charlotte, Student Ambassador

i visited norwich for one of their open days and felt like it was quite disorganised… i’ve also spoken to students who study there and have been brutally honest about not receiving support and the course being unorganised also! just wanted to let you know

aah, i'm so sorry, i didn't see this! i hope you're doing well! i actually ended up reconsidering going to NUA and have changed my top choices to falmouth and AUB, as i actually thought more about the buildings being spread out around the city and realized i'd rather go to a campus uni :') also, i want to do a placement year, and it was almost 9x as expensive at NUA totally understand what you mean! transport is also gonna be a big issue if i go to falmouth, as i have family in london and outside of the uk, so travel is gonna be long and more expensive from there... but i do love the natural atmosphere :'( i'm probably gonna make another post soon about these two, but i hope you're able to decide! it does help knowing i'm not alone, i'm always open for a chat if you feel the same way!

Hi! On exactly the same boat here. Have you decided where to go? I'm still hesitating between Falmouth and AUB.

Hi! I'm still torn between AUB and Falmouth... Have you decided where to go? As AUB is much closer to central London, I'm thinking of going there but Falmouth seems to be attractive as well...

Have you visited both?

Falmouth is a very pretty little town but if you’re used to London it’s going to feel very very different! Things like shopping options and entertainment/concerts/theatres/cinema are a lot more limited (for example it’s a 4 hour trip each way by public transport to the nearest ikea! Compared to an hour from AUB to Southampton ikea)
