Engineering Project - Gold Crest Award Advice

I'm a year 12 student who would like to apply for mechanical engineering in the future. I've been trying to find some supercurriculars to strengthen my application, and the Gold Crest Award seemed like an interesting option. However it's been difficult to figure out an engineering project as I'm still inexperienced with hands-on work would anyone be able to recommend anything that I could explore? I'm willing to learn new skills that would help in the future as well!
Thanks!

Do you have any specific areas of interest when it comes to Mechanical Engineering? Or any hobbies that would maybe link in?

Also it's worth considering which areas of Mechanical Engineering you enjoy the most, or if there's an area you would like to improve through doing the project.

It's recommended for Gold that you work with a mentor. Is there anyone local to you that would be suitable to mentor you that perhaps has a problem you could help to solve?

I know you mention you haven't got much hands-on experience, but bear in mind that CREST projects don't need to be practical - they could be communication or research projects. So I guess it depends on which area you feel you'd like to focus on.

Have you seen the CREST library at all? It might have some ideas to get you started:

What do we need to do in Gold Crest Award exactly? I am thinking to do something too...Can someone let me know what needs to be done from student's side? Like an essay? If yes how long? Report?
