Access to HE: Science- Med at uni

Hi, I need help from anyone who knows about Access to HE diplomas or has done one. I will start mine this September and it's for 1 year. I want to study medicine at University. Do I take my UCAT this summer before beginning my access course? Or, do I do my UCAT next summer?

Yes, you need to take your UCAT this summer before starting your Access course. I'm doing a Pre-Access course now, but I'll start my Access course this September, and I have to take the UCAT before it begins... btw good luck🎀

Thank you for your reply. Hope things go well for you too! If you don't mind me asking, which Access to HE course will you be doing and which universities for medicine accept Access courses?

Am going to study Access to Medicine and will apply to Bristol University. Manchester University also has some places available. I can list more universities if you’d like to know in detail.

Thank you! Unfortunately, I can't do the Access to Medicine course as there's no colleges near me that do it and online is expensive so I'm stuck with the Science one! If you know any more universities that would accept the science course, please let me know!

Universities that accept the Science one are limited, unfortunately. I found these:

Bristol: "Access to HE Diploma in Science, Biomedical/Medical/Health Science or Psychology (or similar titles). The 45 graded Level 3 credits must include at least 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit or above; at least 12 credits at Distinction from Chemistry units; and at least 12 credits (with 9 at Distinction) from one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics."

Exeter: "Pass the QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma with 30 L3 credits at Distinction and 15 L3 credits at Merit"

Manchester: "Your Access course must be science-based and you must have 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3. We require a minimum of 15 graded credits each in Biology and Chemistry. We require Distinctions in all Level 3 credits."

Oxford: https://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/study/medicine/pre-clinical/requirements/academic (scroll down)

Southampton: Maybe. See: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/medicine-bm5-degree-bmbs#entry and choose "Access to HE Diploma" from the "Show more entry requirements" drop-down box.

Access to HE Medicine would open up more. Whereabouts in the country are you? There are quite a few Access to HE Medicine courses around the country. Have you checked out all of the ones listed on the Access to HE site? https://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/course-search

Thank you. I appreciate all of your help! I'm from Birmingham and I have checked everywhere and unfortunately there are no colleges that do the medicine course nearby. The only option for me to do the medicine course is online but it's costly whereas doing an access course at a college will be free

Thank you. I'll contact them but then again, a few universities mention that they don't accept access courses taken online; they prefer in person courses.

I don't know if this would be an option for you, but on my Access course, there was one student who lived a few hours away and travelled into the city and stayed overnight for the class days. The course was three days a week, so perhaps something to consider to open up the universities you can apply to?
