Medicine without Alevel Chemistry

I’m currently in year 11 and studying for my gcse. Predicted mostly 7s and 8s with one 6. However i’m struggling with gcse chemistry, ( i think I’ll get a 6 or a 7).

Over the last yr i’ve been interested in medicine i’ve researched every aspect abt the application process and im aware that i realistically need chemistry.

If i dont take it i limit myself to 4 or 5 med schools.

Reasons for not taking.
1. doubt my ability
2. i don’t rlly enjoy it
3. i’ve had lots of health problems and im missing key concepts.

I really need some people advice with this. Is it worth taking and risking or could i get away with it?

Yes, it is worth taking. Chemistry is important to basically all medical schools as a lot of what you cover in the first year requires an understanding of biochem that you get from both biology and chemistry. You actually don't need biology compared to chemistry, that is how important chemistry is.
If you really can't take it and you are 100% sure you will not get an A, you shouldn't take it. It is borderline impossible to get into almost any undergrad medicine course without all A's, so you'd have to look to do a foundation year or graduate entry etc.
Something to remember as well, medicine is a very hard course with a lot of studying, so if you aren't up for a lot of studying maybe rethink. I know you will be, but you will also have to give up your year 12 summer to study for the ucat as well, so it is a lot.
Best of luck, if you have any more questions I'll try my best to answer them!

studying isn’t the problem i’m more than commited. i’m doing the most in my year and i’ve got a bad illness that makes it hard. My brain just doesn’t work well with numbers and so therefore i’m just worried abt alevel chem. i’m doing ok at gcse i just don’t understand it as much as biology nor do i enjoy it.

Sorry to hear that. If it is a condition, maybe other medical schools would make an allowance if you emailed them to ask.
Best of luck.

Hi, I’ve applied for medicine 2025 entry without a level chemistry (Biology and Psychology instead) I still had choices from some good unis (I applied to Newcastle, Leicester, Manchester, and Sheffield which all don’t need chemistry. I’ve received interviews as well. I know that Lancaster, Plymouth, UEA, Southampton and KMMS also don’t need chemistry so don’t be discouraged even though your options are limited

My biggest advice is to do at least two science subjects including biology (psychology is also alright) but you could do maths or physics if that’s more your strong area.
Hi @tom47234912348

Lancaster University offers MBChB Medicine and Surgery, a 5-year programme for which Chemistry isn't strictly necessary at A-Level (requiring Biology and Psychology instead). However, from what I've heard from medicine applicants, Chemistry could create a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that would be strongly beneficial for a degree in Medicine. In my opinion, it's best to go to an Open Day to talk with current students and teaching staff for more perspectives. It helped me narrow down my choices.

We also offer Medicine and Surgery with a Gateway Year (MBChB A104), a 6-year programme with reduced requirements if applicants meet widening participation criteria. The initial Gateway Year is designed to prepare you for the medical degree programme, with other pathways possible if you cannot progress onto the medical degree. This may be helpful if you are concerned about the outcome of a Chemistry A-Level, but I would check the criteria and consider reaching out to the department for clarity.

If you wish to speak with Lancaster Medical School, their contacts are as follows: [email protected] or +44 (0)1524 594547

I hope this helped, if you have further questions do let us know!
