Grades to get into top unis - LSE, Cambridge, Oxford, KCL etc,,

I want to go into economics at a Russel group uni however my GCSE grades are 877666665. Assuming I get A* in my current a levels (maths, chemistry, psychology) do you think those unis would pick me and is it worth picking up another A level (economics)

Hello there!

Its great to hear you're aiming for a top uni and are on track for good grades!

I would say the following...

1.

Don't be swayed by the Russell Group label - there are plenty of very high performing unis (e.g Bath, Loughborough, Lancaster, St Andrews) who are not in the group. Instead I'd take a look at one of the league tables like the complete university guide and use that as a starting point.

2.

Most unis will will only ask for three A Levels but if you wanted to do something extra, then perhaps consider taking up an EPQ as these are highly regarded and if you get an A some unis will consider you for an alternative offer one grade or so below the typical offer.

3.

Unis consider a number of factors when looking at an application and so its very difficult to predict who you will get offers from. I would, when you're looking at courses you may want to go for, to double check any GCSE requirements they have (for example some will want a 4/7 in GSE maths and/or english but may will not).

4.

The general advice is to go for one aspirational uni (requirements 1-2 grades above what you're predicted), 2-3 realistic unis (requirements that match your PGs) and one insurance choice (requirements 1-2 grades below your PGs) that you'd be more than happy to go to but is there as a safety net in case things don't go your way on results day.

I would personally say that your academic profile so far is very strong and if you do the best you can with your A Levels and put in a good PS then there will be a lot of unis out who would more than happily make you offers. However I would advise doing an EPQ instead of another A Level and doing it in a subject related to the kind of degree you may want to study 🙂

Best of luck with everything and if you have any questions please post away!

Would probably depend on how you performed compared to the rest of your school. I think Oxford scores GCSEs as part of the interview shortlisting process but the others don't care too much. Not having further maths A level is going to be a problem for Cambridge and LSE though.

Hi @Anonimu
Firstly, I will say that there are many high ranking universities that have great courses and career prospects that aren't classed as Russel Group, so I would recommend looking at a university rankings specifically for economics eg. Economics Rankings 2025, to see if there are any other high achieving universities to consider.
Also, I would recommend looking at universities that don't require a prerequisites in economics, as most universities will only require 3 A Levels. For instance, at Lancaster the entry requirements for BSc Economics are AAB including Mathematics, for information can be found here Economics BSc Hons (L100) - Lancaster University.
Hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

Without further maths you face a steep uphill struggle with LSE and Cambridge.
