Hi there!

Most Universities will normally have slightly different definitions of contextual offers - they usually are given based on the area you live in and whether many people go to higher/post-compulsory education, and also the economic aspects of the area. Sometimes if you do extra-curriculars affiliated with a University then they may offer you a contextual offer due to this. For example, I did a Summer School with Durham University between y12 and y13 and they gave me a contextual offer of BBB, rather than the standard entry of AAB.

You can normally check on the University websites to see if they give contextual offers - usually if the Uni has lower entry requirements they don't give any contextual offers. If you are eligible for a contextual offer, you don't need to separately apply for this anywhere, it will just be automatically applied!

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this - really helpful 😀
Hi there,

A contextual offer is a reduced grade offer made by universities that takes into account factors in your background or personal circumstances that may have impacted your education. Universities consider various aspects when making contextual offers, such as whether you live in an area with low progression to higher education, attend a school with below-average academic performance, come from a low-income household, have spent time in care, or are the first in your family to attend university.

Universities will automatically consider you for a contextual offer if you meet their criteria. The information they use comes from your UCAS application, postcode data, school performance data, and any additional information you provide about your circumstances. Each university has its own contextual admissions policy, so it's worth checking their websites or contacting them directly to understand their specific requirements.

Typically, contextual offers are one or two grades lower than the standard entry requirements. For example, if the standard offer is ABB, a contextual offer might be BBC.

Please let me know if you have any questions,
Ilya
