Rejected by OASC three times

Hello,
I have been rejected by OASC three times, they liked my interviews but said i was well below standard in the exercise phase and put a restriction for 1.5 years to reapply. Should I apply again? Or go for Avionics Tech roles.
What can you do in the next 18 months that could boost your chances next time?

What made you go for a Commission and, if you want to be an Officer (was it Engineer), would you be happy as a Technician, and for however many years you were intending to serve? They are vastly different roles in terms of the work you do and the responsibilities you have.

Thank you, I am not sure what I can do other than work on the feedback given. They told me my weak areas, and I definitely can improve on those. But would a fourth time be worth it? I also noticed the same person who evaluted me twice was the one who fails me all the time. I do want to be in the RAF, I like the lifestyle the people, and the atmosphere, also cost saving etc. and have visited like cosford and cranwell so many times. I went for a commission because have post grad qualifications and yes its engineering, but someone also told me they have so many engineers at the moment... they are very picky. I want to serve for my remaining life, thats what I have decided. I have an application in now as a tech.... but my recruiter said to me that I am too qualified for the tech role..... but its hands on, and definitley wanna do it....

And is it only me or there are other people who got in after several attempts? I am a bit concerned that three times rejection would mean I am not good enough....for the officers role?

On about the 3rd attempt, certainly a 4th, you need to listen to the feedback very carefully and make sure you are hearing it 'honestly', because there is usually a strong hint if you are not right for the job. An 18 month break is about as long as they give, so you were a long way short of the mark, although if you jammed the 3 previous applications very close together, maybe it was just a way to make you take the time to work on improving.

You will take longer to get to officer by going via the Tech route than applying directly, so best get/keep your current job, spend 18 months really focussing on all the improvements you need to make, and give it one last go. In 18 months, recruiting numbers might have changed. You will have matured and learnt a lot. It could have a different outcome. Lots of officers ding OASC first time around.

Thank you, do you think going as a reservist would also help me improve, I am very good at the interview, they say its impressive, but its the exercise phase where I am below standard, and well below standard.... i got this twice on last two applications, the first time they said I had mixed performance in the exercise phase

Work on the feedback how?

If they have enough people for a branch or trade recruiting can be stopped; they were recruiting when you applied, so it's not a case of being 'very picky', they want the best people for the job and whilst they've got recruits coming through the door they won't keep the weaker candidates. Remember at interview you're being assessed on your own merit, after that you'll be up against other people.

Yes, there are people who do OASC more than once, but it depends what they are applying for. I went through OASC more than once, but was applying for sponsorship.

The thing I don't understand is how I can improve? I need someone who is experienced to go through my feedback and advise me.

Ask the Recruitment Officer at the AFCO. When I did that job I had candidates arrange to come in with the paperwork for a debrief. However, they should be asking you what opportunities you have to improve. Do some genuine self-analysis and think about what were you told; on the 2nd and 3rd attempts it's familiar enough to you that you should be able to think about your performance; was it planning or hangar exercises? Was it lack of participation, lack of leadership, unclear communication?

Also meant to say, I did have people with quite high qualifications who applied for airmen jobs, but that was because they wanted to be hands on (several for Technician, one Photographer); however, that was their first choice, not an option because they didn't pass for Officer. There were more of them than those who didn't pass tests for Pilot or OASC and opted for a non-commissioned role.

If your heart is set you can always join as an AV then after like 3 years apply from within for commission (I've known people do it). They usually make much better officers too from my experience(Actually have a clue whats going on)
