Eligibility for UCAS Extra:
You would need to either have received 5 UCAS rejections or to have withdrawn from all 5 choices.

In the case of only using 4 choices initially, applying to a random course as your 5th choice and withdrawing in a few minutes after the choice has been processed, should make you eligible (speaking from personal experience - please share your advice if you think otherwise). Before applying to a medical school through UCAS Extra, please make confirm that Medical School is definitely in Extra

Click here to find out more directly from the UCAS website.

What about UCAT?
If you sat UCAT in 2024, then you are required to use the same score for UCAS Extra.

How to keep updated on which Medical Schools are in UCAS Extra?
- The university's website course page - they usually state if they're in UCAS Extra or not
- Contact the Medical School to find out, either by email or telephone
- UCAS search tool - filter by course vacancies (this may not be reliable, so double check wesite or contact them)
- This thread

What's next?
If you are unable to receive an offer through UCAS Extra, UCAS Clearing will be your next step. This will open on 05/07/2025. We will have a separate thread for this closer to the time.

General TSR rules:
(1) Please don't ask for or post group chat links.
(2) Please don't ask for or post interview questions.
(3) Please don't offer to buy and sell items.

I’m planning to do UCAS extra for medicine as I’ve been rejected from my choices. I do have an offer but I’m not keen on going there since it’s not the course I want to do !
Hopefully we can get through this guys. It may not be easy getting rejected but I’ve been rejected 4 times now so I’m pretty numb.

It's never the end of the road until you say it is. You've got this and we're all rooting for you.

If you don't mind me asking, are these all post-interview or pre-interview rejections? If post-interview rejections, you should be able to get in touch with them at some point to get feedback depending on the university :console:

We also have an interview preparation thread, would you like me to post a link to it?

They’re all pre unfortunately.
I’m a young carer so my application was contextual.
It would be lovely to join the interview prep thread .
Do you guys have any idea what unis do clearing for med too
I heard KCL was doing clearing last year.

This is the interview prep thread: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7535308

Unis going into clearing changes year to year and can be quite difficult to predict. Best thing to do is create a list of those you meet entry requirements for, especially UCAT. I have a link to last year's thread somewhere and will link to it for you to have a read through when I get home :console:

This year's thread will be made closer to the time for clearing

How do I see the UCAT requirements for unis ?

I recommend looking at this year's applicants threads and see what kind of scores might have been rejected and accepted for interview. This is listed in this thread:

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7517557

If you can't find it through that, you could look at this thread for past years' stats (unfortunately I haven't had time to update this since the last time I looked at it with uni and exams):
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7387522

Another resource is looking at FOI requests (on the whatdotheyknow website) and having a thorough look through the university's website course pages for admission statistics but data for this application cycle won't be available yet. Having a look through the selection criteria for each university can help guide you too.

I'm just putting all of this down into this post whilst I have the time - I understand and relate to how overwhelming it can be right now. Biggest piece of advice is to plan ahead (take control of the situation and do your research well) but take it one step at a time and give it your best shot (even a small chance is a chance in itself, so don't give up). You've got this!!
I’ve heard that UCL did not go through clearing last year for med but when people called in asking if they have places they offered on a first come first serve basis considering you had the grades !

Not sure if this is a popular term, but think of it like 'shadow' Clearing. The university may not advertise they are in clearing but always worth calling up.

Think about prioritising which universities to contact first over others. Avoid applying to those you've been rejected from already pre-interview as entry requirements are extremely unlikely to have changed (sometimes can be better increased depending on med school).

Ohh I see !
I’m definitely starting to make a list of all the unis I want to call up
Even tho I’ve gotten rejected from kings I’m still going to ring them up and give it one last try just bcoz I really like that specific uni. I am still prioritising and looking at other unis too !
I still have hope 🙂

Hope is what matters right now :yep:

I went through two application cycles and now I'm a 3rd year about to start my clinical phase. Keep at it and you'll get there :hugs:

Just one question
Some people told me that UCAS extra does not allow u to apply for medicine since you have used all ur four spaces for med already and now I’m confused ?

Have you used up your 5th choice?

If yes - you can withdraw as it's not medicine and if you don't want to do that course.

If no - you can apply to a random one, give it a moment to load on your UCAS and then withdraw.

If you're completely unsure, then you can contact UCAS directly to help you through the process. Bear in mind UCAS Extra opens 26th February.

This process makes you eligible for UCAS Extra as you will have used up all 5 choices (either rejections or withdrawals) and you can then have the option to add an 'extra' choice (think of it like a 6th choice).

Have a thorough read of this:

I have applied to Biomedical Engineering and have gotten a place but I don’t want to do it so I’ll just withdraw it
Am I able to apply to med for ucas extra using that space then ?

Once UCAS Extra opens - it's doesn't replace your 5th choice but a sort of 6th choice. Please make sure you thoroughly read through the link I put in my previous reply before doing anything.
@KA_P Can my daughter still go into clearing if she've already got two non-medicine offers please? As long as she didn't firm either of them?

Clearing opens in July after UCAS Extra closes.

Yes, she would need to withdraw from both or use the 'decline my place' button. We will have a thread specifically for Medicine Clearing closer to the time.

More information can be found in last year's Clearing thread for Medicine until then:
