Engineering at russel group unis

Hey guys,
I was wondering if it was realistic for me to apply to unis like Cambridge, imperial and UCL for engineering courses if I don’t do a level further maths? I do a level maths but I was looking at the stats for acceptance in these unis and majority of ppl for engineering took a level further maths.

RG is irrelevant for Engineering - it's better to look at somewhere with a year in industry if you want to work as an Engineer.

Work experience essential to getting a good job. The placement year is also paid!

Bath has the best placement scheme- Loughborough is also good. Non-RG often have better links and Brookes is worth a look as it has brand new facilities.

Surrey is known for their placement scheme (and I agree even if I don’t study engineering). I’ve seen people talk positively about Bath when it comes to placements as well.

Surrey is not known for Engineering at all and Guildford must be one of the most boring places in England.

I think that it is ironically (engineering being the course that it’s known for) but I might be mistaken here.

The placement links at Surrey are definitely good in my experience (several people have said this and I can vouch for this).

Location is a personal preference (despite Guildford being boring compared to other places).I personally would dislike living or working in London but I’d imagine most students would say the opposite.

To answer OP’s original question, I’d imagine that for Cambridge and Imperial (can’t comment on UCL), having FM would be better (if the school offers it).

But maybe someone like @mnot can provide better advice than I can.

Not one of my students has ever gone there for Engineering - there are better. I wouldn't personally choose a London uni either but there's a happy medium ..

No, not if it's required and your school offers FMaths [or is in England].

Yep that’s just one school, there are other schools and students in the country. In the same way that many students from a single cohort at Brampton Manor got offers from Oxbridge (so they could easily just recommend that people go to Oxbridge even if that’s not always the best option for some students).

It’s about personal preference. OP was asking about places with good places with a year in industry, I suggested Surrey as I’ve seen several people in real life and on TSR say that Surrey has good placement links. And I’ll have to agree with the people who I’ve seen say this (the careers service and placement team at the university are genuinely good).

OP I would research different universities with a placement year and see which ones you like more (based on location, course structure, cost of living etc). I wouldn’t get so caught up on the RG label.

Yes but I do know lots of other schools [i do support work in lots] and Surrey is just not on the radar at all. It might be known where you are but not in any of the LAs I've worked in.

my quote got eaten so a quick one:

Surrey has a decent engineering faculty, but it’s imo not in the strongest pool of engineering unis (Imperial/Lufbra/Bristol/Sheffield/Oxbridge/Notts/Soton etc.)

The other unis have discernibly more: world leading expertise, facilities, alumni in senior management in industry…

No idea how good placement team is, although personally think this is more university marketing, ultimately getting hired into a placement program is far more about the individual student (and them putting in the effort with each company)

I recommend further maths regardless of if you are choosing X uni or not, it’s the best preparation for a degree in engineering you can get
