What university for creative writing (undergraduate)?

Hello! I was wondering, what universities do ya'll recommend for this subject? I know most unis don't offer standalone cw but with english lang or lit.

I've heard East Anglica, Leeds, Edinburgh, and Warwick are really good. International student from US with APs. I'm applying next year.

Hello,

The university of Chester has a really good English department that offers an undergraduate degree in creative writing, the website is www.chester.ac.uk. As an English student myself at Chester, I can highly recommend the department. The tutors are all amazing and their support for the students and enthusiasm and passion for the courses they teach is wonderful.

As a creative writing student, the university offers lots of writing opportunities to have your work printed in the department magazine.

Outside of the English department, the university itself is really great. The pastoral support services team are available to help with any form of student support you need, there is a financial team, an accommodation team, a mental health and well-being support network. As well as this the academic support independent of the course you study is also invaluable, each subject has its own librarian, the academic skills team are great in assisting with writing and research skills and the university has a Royal Literary Fellow to offer guidance for students.

As you are an international student, you might be interested in the university international team that can help you with every aspect of studying here.

The campus is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre which is a small city, but packed with every type of restaurant cuisine, all the high street shops, as well as a super theatre, a cinema, a gym and tonnes of history ranging all the way back to the Roman era, Tudor, Victorian up to present day.

I hope this has helped,
Jess

Hi @e31231 !

I am in my third year studying creative writing at Edge Hill University and I have really enjoyed it! I am studying a single honours which is just creative writing. I found this to be the best for me as I enjoy English but want to be a writer so this course allows me to focus fully on the craft of writing.

It's a great course as we have been introduced to all forms of writing (poetry, script, fiction, non fiction etc) and this has been so helpful in finding what kind of writing I want to do. In third year there is a good amount of freedom with what writing you can do and I believe the course has really prepared me for writing for publication.

Do you have any questions about the course? I would be happy to answer anything! 😁

Hi e31231, 👋

It's great to hear you are considering a degree in creative writing! ✏️

I did my undergraduate degree in English Literature and chose some of the amazing creative writing modules that are available. The creative writing lecturers are so friendly and supportive and I learnt so much from them.

I also did the MA in English Literature and chose the creative writing poetry modules but you can also do an MA in creative writing specifically after undergraduate. 😄

The University of Sheffield is especially lucky as we have the amazing Centre for Poetry, Poetics and Creative Writing, run by Dr Agnes Lehoczky and Professor Adam Piette. This centre organises poetry readings throughout the year and also publishes a yearly creative writing journal called The Sheffield Review. 🎤

Let me know if you have any questions about creative writing at the University of Sheffield. You can either reply here or send myself, or another student ambassador, a messgae via our Chat to our Students page here. 📢

All the best, 😀
