I want to apply for a PhD, I don't know where to start

I really want to start a PhD this coming academic year, however I don't know where to begin in the application process! Can someone give me the general procedure, or what I need to do first? thanks

The answer to this will depend on which country do you want to do your phd in (uk,us, etc), what is your current profile, what program and university you want to apply to, etc etc

Hello,

The first step really is to decide what exactly you want to study and develop a research question, it needs to be something original and you need to be able to demonstrate you are developing something new that hasn’t been done, or written about in this way before, basically a gap in the research. Once you have this, you will need to find a supervisor who is willing to work with you on the PhD. The supervisor will be someone in a university who will be supporting you.

From here you will then need to apply to the university, by creating a project plan and research proposal. After this has been submitted, the next step is usually an interview with members of the department who will discuss with you your proposed plan, why it’s adding to the current body of research, what you hope to achieve with it etc.

PhDs are hard work, but well worth it, I can’t recommend it enough! Good luck with everything

What field are you in? What qualifications do you have? What universities are you interested in? What's your funding situation—do you need to apply for funding, or do you plan to self-fund?
