Student loans wales

I currently live in Wales and am debating on whether to choose Cardiff university, Gloucestershire university or UWE. (For occupational therapy)

With Cardiff university I can get the NHS bursary. Which would cover my tuition fees. However, will my maintenance loan decrease? (My household income is about £63k). I’m unsure how to work out what i can get with and without the bursary.

Same goes with the universities in England. Will my maintenance loan be decreased?

The following page explains the maintenance loan and grant amounts (for 2024-25):

As your household income is above the £59,200 threshold, you would be eligible for an £11,150 loan and a £1,000 grant = £12,150 (based on you living away from home). This would be the same whether you study in Wales and take the bursary, or study in England.

However, for the NHS Wales bursary, your household income means you would not receive the additional income-based bursary part of the funding.

In summary, if you take the NHS Wales bursary in Cardiff you would get:

- your tuition fees paid
- £1,000 grant
- £11,150 maintenance loan

If you study in England, you will get:

- a tuition fee loan (paid straight to your uni)
- £1,000 grant
- £11,150 maintenance loan
- the NHS LSF annual training grant of £5,000

These are based on current figures as SFW and NHS Wales have not yet confirmed figures for 2025.

Hiya,

normaw gave a brilliant summary of the finances! If you were wondering anything else about Cardiff to help with your decision though, happy to help!
