PHD

I’m in first year still but I been consistently feeling like I want to study a PHD and grades are not good but there’s still time for improvement. Did anyone else feel like they wanted to do a PHD?

Yes I feel that way, I'm doing my second degree right now because my PhD research will be science based but my background isn't heavily in the sciences. Keep going! If you have a passion for a topic or several topics, look into it! Is the PhD the same subject as your Undergrad? That will help you quite a bit

Yea it will be the same and good luck!!
Hi there!

I personally have always wanted to do a PhD since before Uni, and I still want to at the end of my third year! My advice/tips/info:

You normally need a 2:1 (60%) or a first class (70%) at Undergrad to be considered

First year grades don't normally count towards your degree grade (or only count for 10-25%) so your first year grades will not usually affect your ability to be accepted onto a Phd course

Most places require a good Masters and don't accept straight from undergrad

You need to LOVE researching and writing long essays/reports - if you don't enjoy doing this then you might actually hate the process of a PhD

You can get a loan for a PhD but you can also get Studentships - studentships are normally where researchers at Universities put out an ad for a specific PhD project that they will fund and people will apply to those - they will normally be fully funded and sometimes the student will get paid a stipend to do the research

You sometimes need to show evidence of research skills, so if possible try and get a role as a research assistant whilst at Uni

I personally am planning on doing an MPhil (a Masters by research) rather than an MSc to try and help my research skills before I apply to a PhD

Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!!
