Slt University of Essex or University of East Anglia

So I really want to study speech and language therapy at uni as I doubt I'll be able to find an apprenticeship.

Would it be worth or be needed to do a placement year.

Uea only offer a 3 year degree , where as the Essex offers the 3 year or a 4 year degree with a placement.

Or if anyone can provide further help on the apprenticeship route as I'm finding it difficult to find information and rough requirements, ideally within the Essex area ( excluding London.)

Hi @Rose_99

I hope you're doing well.

It is great to hear that you are interested in studying Speech and Language Therapy.

Most universities offer integrated placements as part of the programme, as this is often a requirement for them to be an accredited course. These won't be a placement year, but will involve smaller amounts of time spent at a wider variety of different placements to give you a more well-rounded experience of all the different settings and client groups a Speech and Language Therapist might work with.

Based on the UEA website, they offer several placements throughout the course, including 2 8-weight placements within the course. So I would not personally say it is necessary to do a placement year.

I hope this helps!

As above, all courses will include placements so you don't need to do the extra year.

Hi @Rose_99 👋

It is super that you are wanting to study Speech and Language Therapy, that you have researched it, and that you are considering us! 😊🎓️

Studying BSc Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Essex is a great choice. Our course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), and 91% of our Health and Social Care undergraduate graduates are in employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2024). You will have access to dedicated facilities such as the Communications Labs (adult and paediatric) and simulation wards to practice examinations assessing biological processes. 🗣️🗨️

As part of the three-year degree you would spend around 75 days on placement to advance your clinical skillset. In addition to that, you can choose to extend your degree by an extra year working with an organisation in a field associated with speech and language therapy to enhance your professional skills. You are still able to make a decision about the placement year whilst you are studying with us. 🥼🩺

The University of Essex is just outside of Colchester, less than one hour away from London on the train (with three stations near to campus). Our Students' Union is amazing (top 10 in the UK), with over 165 societies to join, a library (open 24/7), gym and sports centre (free if you live on campus), cinema, two bars and a nightclub on campus. Students are supported by the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service and we are now ranked 29th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport table. 🌟

You can chat to current students on Unibuddy to find out more! 📱

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions 👍️🎓️😎

Thank you Amy , I really appreciate your advice.
I would love to know what kind of volunteering I should pursue to have a better chance of getting on the course.

I have 3 months experience working at a nursery but this was from 2022

Thanks

Hiya @Rose_99 !

Any placement that you did in the past if its relevant to the course can be used for your application.
For example you could get some practice from a clinic over the summer and so on.

Just to let you know the university has more than 100 societies where students can join to meet new students and we do offer a Speech and Language therapy society.

Hi there,

That’s such a great question, and honestly both Essex and UEA have strong courses for Speech and Language Therapy, but I can share a bit more from the UEA side as that’s where I am.

The SLT course at UEA is a 3-year degree but it’s very hands-on from early on placements are built into the course across all three years rather than being separated out as a placement year. So you’re not missing out on real-world experience at all. In fact, many students like this model because it means you’re constantly applying what you learn to practice throughout the degree, rather than waiting until a single year.

UEA also has great links with local NHS trusts and community settings, so you’ll get a really broad range of placement experiences and Norwich is a lovely, student-friendly city to live in, with a supportive uni environment.

If you’re looking for a 3-year course with strong placement opportunities integrated from the start, UEA could be a brilliant choice. Happy to answer any other questions about it if you’re still deciding!

Best wishes,
Daniel

Hi @Rose_99

I hope you're doing well.

Your experience working at a nursery will be really useful when applying so it is great that you have done that.

In terms of other volunteering, I would suggest that looking for opportunities working with groups of people with potential communication difficulties, or in settings where speech and language therapists might work. It is notoriously difficult to get direct shadowing with a speech and language therapist, but it would be good to get some experience in settings where they operate to gain an understanding of what they do.

You could try and find some opportunities in schools, hospitals, early years settings, nursing homes, or community settings. Even just a day at any of these would provide valuable insight into these different groups of people, and how speech and language therapists might support them.

I hope this helps!
