Do unis give offers with lower requirements if your extracurriculars are outstanding?

Do unis give different offers to different students, or is it the same for everybody?

Do unis give different offers to different students, or is it the same for everybody?

Hi there!

This is a really good question so thanks for raising it!

Most unis do 'contextual offers' if people meet certain criteria, such as coming from an area of low university participation, have unpaid caring responsibilities, or have significant mitigating circumstances. These are usually 1-2 grades below the standard requirements.

Some unis also give 'alternative offers' to people who have done extra qualifications such as achieving an A in an EPQ, or if you've participated in a widening access programme such as a summer school with that uni. These are usually 1 grade lower than the standard requirements.

These offers are designed to level the playing field and give all students a fair chance of coming to their chosen university and making sure that people are not disadvantaged because of circumstances they can't control. Other than that unis don't pick and choose the offers they give and as long as you meet the requirements and put in a good PS then you have as much chance as everyone else.

If you wanted to find out more then there should be info on your uni's website, and if anything is unclear then perhaps ring up the admissions team 🙂

Hoping this helps!

As above, the majority of successful candidates get the typical offer, with a smaller number getting a reduced one for contextual reasons. There will also be some variation depending what qualifications are being taken.

Otherwise, if you get a reduced offer, it's a recruitment measure rather than being swayed by your x-currics.
