Should I teach myself an a-level outside of school?

I would like to do a fourth a-level or possibly an as level for fun outside of school as I do 3 a-levels and an EPQ but my school does not allow you to do 4 and an EPQ. Do you think it is feasible for me to teach myself? I am doing Biology, Chemistry and Maths at school, and I would like to do either further maths or computer science as well. I saw that for computer science a-level, most exam boards require you to do an NEA, so if I was to do cs, I would have to do an as level and not a-level. I really want to challenge myself but I don't know if this is a bad idea.

Any idea what you might want to do after your A levels? Typically it would be more valuable to do super curriculars if you were wanting to apply to uni, perhaps the obvious exception being if you wanted to apply for a top university doing maths when further maths would definitely be beneficial.
Hey there! 👋 :hello:
I love your enthusiasm for learning - it's absolutely fantastic that you're considering taking on an extra challenge! Let me share my thoughts on this (as someone who's been where you are).

Let's Talk About Your Study Adventure! 🚀

The Reality Check (but don't worry!):

I know you're already juggling 3 A-levels and an EPQ (which is quite a plate full already! GIVE YOUSELF A PAT ON THE BACK)

Self-studying is like being your own teacher - exciting but needs extra dedication and time

You'll need to be your own cheerleader and task-master (but you sound motivated!)

while you can learn with available material hearing insider info from a qualified teacher can be a gamechanger.

Your Subject Options (both super interesting!):

Further Maths would be like adding a turbo boost to your current Maths studies 🔢

CS AS-level could be your gateway to coding without the stress of NEA 💻

Both subjects are challenging but SO rewarding!

Real Talk: Your current subjects need to stay in the spotlight! Think of this extra subject as a bonus track on your academic album, not the main single! 🎵

If you're thinking "Yeah, I can do this!" (and I think you might be able to!), here's my friendly advice:

Your Game Plan:

Try the AS-level - it's like dipping your toes in before the full swim 🏊*♂️

Map out your study time (maybe those Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings?)

Get your hands on some good study materials (I can recommend some!)

Maybe find a study buddy or mentor to keep you motivated 🤝

CS AS-level might be your best bet here! It's like getting the best of both worlds - you get to learn something new and exciting without the pressure of NEA. Plus, coding skills are super valuable no matter what you end up doing! 💫

Just remember - universities are mainly interested in your top 3 A-levels, so this is all about YOU and YOUR interests. And honestly? That's the best reason to do it! 🌟
Keep that amazing curiosity and drive - but also be kind to yourself if you need to adjust your plans along the way! You've got this! 💪
